About the role

About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.

The Role:

Generate:Biomedicines is seeking a team-oriented scientist-engineer to advance CryoEM microscope automation. As a subject matter expert, you will drive development of innovative solutions for automating our electron microscopes, ensuring seamless integration into our scientific workflows. You will play a pivotal role in optimization of microscope performance, coordinate maintenance activities, and contribute to the efficient delivery of high-quality protein structures. This role offers the opportunity to spearhead our effort to deploy cutting-edge technology and collaborate across computational and experimental teams to transform the use of experimental structure in biomedicine development.

Here's how you will contribute:

You will elevate CryoEM microscope automation by:

  • Building upon existing solutions, as well as implementing novel approaches, to achieve more fully autonomous control over advanced electron microscopes
  • Integrating microscope image acquisition with lab informatics, data management, and computational pipelines
  • Optimizing microscope performance by tracking outcomes and developing tools that enable proactive and real-time response
  • Overseeing microscope maintenance activities and service support through close coordination with external vendors, internal lab operations, and our team of scientist-microscopists
  • Refining operating procedures, communicating best practices, and sharing expertise by providing individualized training to team members
  • Collaborating closely with team members to ensure that accelerated acquisition through automation is optimized for efficient delivery of high-quality protein structures

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Ph.D in Structural Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, PhD in a scientific field of study and four (4) years of related experience; or Master’s degree in a scientific field of study and ten (10) years of related experience; or Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field of study and twelve (12) years of related experience.
  • Strong programming expertise exemplified by successful deployment of software or plugins for automating electron microscopy (e.g., SmartEPU, SerialEM, Leginon, Latitude, SmartScope, or similar)
  • Working knowledge of software and algorithms for processing cryoEM images for 3D reconstruction
  • Demonstrated practical experience maintaining electron microscope hardware
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and foster strong relationships with all stakeholders including instrument vendor service and product development teams and internal scientific, IT, informatics, and lab operations teams
  • Adaptability to juggle multip
