AOT Technician II - Highway Maintenance

Overview

The AOT District Technician will be required to perform a variety of jobs throughout the year and a significant amount of driving to perform certain field work is required.

 

Field work includes, but is not limited to:

• Inspecting culverts/sink holes and shooting grades for culvert installations
• Surveying and occasional traffic control
• Construction site inspections
• Salt sampling
• Monitoring/inspecting paving and culvert projects
• Assisting towns and Agency personnel with technical advice
• Issuing permits and performing sight distance surveys
• Obtaining environmental permits for stream/wetland work

 

In an emergency storm event, this position is required to assist in damage collection assessments (for State and Town infrastructure) and to coordinate the re-building of our State network. The work done within this position is very diverse and fast-paced.
 
The office is located in Mendon, Vermont and this will be the base of operations. Office work is diverse and will consist of phone calls, e-mails, in-person interactions, paperwork, plan reviews, and right-of-way research. Basic computer skills are necessary, experience with Excel spreadsheets and GIS, Survey123 and CADD programs are encouraged.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Out of state travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field.

OR

Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related field AND two (2) years’ experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.

OR

High school graduation or equivalent AND four (4) years of experience as described above.

OR

One (1) year as an AOT Technician I with the State of Vermont.

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver’s license.
