Do you have a great eye for detail and a passion for customer service? The Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Unemployment is seeking an Unemployment Tax Associate. We offer a flexible hybrid remote and in office work schedule.

Primary responsibilities include:  

  • Provide customer service to employers, resolving questions and issues concerning established Unemployment Tax policy, procedures, and e-services.
  • Research and resolve suspended tax reports and payments.
  • Adjust tax and wage reports when applicable.
  • Reconcile out of balance tax and wage reports.
  • Make liability determinations using established criteria and regulations

Skills or knowledge required:

  • Integrity: Upholding ethical standards and confidentiality with sensitive financial information.
  • Communication: Ability to assist employers over the phone, or in writing, with reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Patience: Ability to assist potentially frustrated customers and providers with reporting, eligibility, and compliance requirements.
  • Analytical Skills: Research, gather and analyze information to reach a conclusion.
  • Detail Oriented: Ensure that work is accurate.
  • Adaptability: Able to shift tasks as priorities change.
  • Time Management: Able to manage cases are varying points.
  • Organization skills: Able to track documents for follow up actions.

Minimum qualifications:

Entry-level to intermediate Training, education, and/or experience in office and administrative support functions demonstrating competency in conducting research, compiling data, providing customer assistance, and using independent judgement to make determinations on routine business matters. All positions in this classification assume the qualifications of: Accounting Associate I.
