Job Description:

General Description: The Dir Nursing Professional Governance is an exceptional and visionary leader promoting a culture of active engagement and collaboration throughout the healthcare team. As the leader of Nursing Professional Governance, this role is responsible for empowering nursing teams to own decision-making about patient care, clinical practice standards, policy development, professional development, and evidence-based care. This role is pivotal in fostering accountability, professional obligation, collateral relationships, and decision-making, ultimately leading to autonomous practice and exemplary empirical outcomes.

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the nursing professional governance structure, which governs nurses and their actions, as well as the processes associated with exercising nursing professional accountability.

  • Align professional governance with the organization's overall mission, values, and goals, ensuring the work is meaningful and relevant.

  • Collaborate with nursing leadership to create an environment for professional governance, whereby leaders communicate a vision for nurses’ authority and accountability and ensure that the governance structure is well resourced.

  • Lead NPG program team in design, maintenance, and growth of the program’s structure and operations.

  • Lead and support strategic initiatives related to advancing measures of Nursing Excellence.

  • Oversee collection, analysis, and presentation of data related to NPG program impact on nurse sensitive indicators and other key performance indicators as identified by the organization.

Empowerment and Engagement:

  • Empower nursing teams to own decision-making processes related to patient care, clinical practice, policy development, and professional development.

  • Foster a collaborative environment that encourages open communication, active engagement, and ownership of decision-making.

  • Provide ongoing in-depth training and facilitation to stakeholders to support the success and sustainability of governance councils.

Promote Positive Patient Outcomes:

  • Collaborate with nursing teams to develop evidence-based care practices that enhance patient outcomes and safety.

  • Encourage continuous improvement and innovation in nursing practices to achieve the highest quality of patient care.

  • Promote interdisciplinary partnerships to advance quality of care and an environment of learning.

Ownership and Accountability:

  • Foster a culture of ownership and accountability among professional nurses, within the domains of practice, quality, competence, and knowledge.

  • Clarify the roles and accountabilities of formal leaders and direct care nurses within the governance structure.

  • Establish mechanisms to track, measure, and present the impact of professional governance initiatives on patient care and nursing practice.

Equity and Inclusion:

  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion within the nursing professional governance framework, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

  • Support representation by nursing across the span of the organization, from the microsystem to the macrosystem level.

Professional Development:

  • Promote understanding of the essence of the nurse as expressed through a professional identity.

  • Support the ongoing professional development of nursing teams, facilitating opportunities for skill enhancement, leadership competency, and career advancement.

Collaboration and Relationship Building:

  • Foster strong collaborative relationships among nursing leadership, clinical teams, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of professional governance initiatives.

  • Collaborate with professional organizations and external partners to share best practices and promote the advancement of nursing professional governance.
