SMUD serves more than 1.4 million customers in the Sacramento area and operates the Upper American River Project (UARP), a large hydroelectric system with 11 reservoirs and 9 powerhouses along the American River basin. As our most efficient and eco-friendly source of power, the UARP delivers clean energy with a total capacity of 732 megawatts (MW), supplying approximately 20% of our customers' electricity during peak demand. As a community-owned, not-for-profit utility, SMUD has been dedicated to providing low-cost, reliable electricity for over 70 years.
We are seeking an Asset Supervisor to join our Power Generation department at our hydro operations facility located off Highway 50, approximately 60 miles east of Sacramento (15 miles east of Placerville). You will provide leadership for specialized technical teams, including Electrical Technicians who install and maintain relays, protective systems, and control equipment; Hydro Operators who manage multi-facility hydroelectric plants, manage high-voltage switching, and system responses; and Hydro Field Technicians who maintain and calibrate hydro-meteorological equipment and field instrumentation, and collect operational data from field sites.
In addition to cultivating a positive and productive working environment, navigating strongly held viewpoints or challenging operational situations, you will be responsible for upholding the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance. The Asset Supervisor will require an understanding of NERC PRC-005-6 maintenance and testing standards for protective relaying (generators, transmission lines, and transformers), voltage and current sensing devices, control circuitry, station service, and station DC supply systems. You will be responsible for scheduling maintenance of NERC-related devices within specified intervals under PRC-005-6, ensuring records of completion and evidence of testing are stored in SMUD's work order management systems.
The ideal candidate has a solid background in hydro operations, proven experience leading maintenance and operational teams, and a talent for inspiring collaboration among multidisciplinary groups. While direct expertise in every technical trade is not required, success in this position depends on a comprehensive knowledge of hydroelectric operations, guiding multidisciplinary teams, and promoting collaboration among staff with diverse skillsets and perspectives. Working closely with the Manager of Generation Maintenance and fellow asset supervisors, you will be part of a team that works together to maintain the safe, compliant, and reliable performance of SMUD's hydroelectric facilities.
