This is a position that will assist department managers in all aspects of operations within the Retail and Merchandising departments of an amusement park. The student will have the opportunity to develop and extend leadership, communication, and management skills through extensive contact with department heads, supervisors, employees, and guests. This position involves quickly developing the experience, competence, and confidence to oversee the entire department.

Adventureland Park - Retail Management Intern

Roles & Responsibilities:

 

    Supervisory Duties:

    • Supervise the daily operations of the Retail and Rentals team and any other assigned departments
    • Lead by example, attitude, and as a representation of Adventureland Resort’s core values
    • Act as an approachable mentor and coach to all assigned team members
    • Become knowledgeable of performing the essential duties of all retail and rentals positions and backfill these positions when needed
    • Participate in all aspects of supervision of assigned employees, including hiring, orientation, training, performance coaching, and discipline.
    • Ensure that all required meal and other breaks are being given in accordance with Iowa  law
    • Assist with team scheduling and timekeeping activities
    • Ensure that the scheduling of minors remains in compliance with all Federal and State laws and regulations.
    • Assist with timekeeping and tip allocations for all assigned hourly team members

    Departmental Duties:

    • Lead and complete special projects to improve process and operational efficiencies
    • Develop the knowledge, experience, judgement, and confidence to perform the duties of a Retail Manager
    • Provide operational and administrative support for all aspects of the Retail department
    • Participate in all aspects of Retail preparation and sales during peak times
    • Establish meaningful working relationships with new and returning managers and employees
    • Complete daily documentation, including daily schedules, checklists, tracking forms, and employee records
    • Manage inventory levels by completing daily stocking of all gift shops, checking orders, and moving inventory between shops
    • Ensure a variety of items are available for guests to purchase and that store shelves are fully stocked
    • Assist with inventorying and buying of merchandise
    • Collaborate with Retail Manager to merchandise stores and improve product sales
    • Oversee ancillary duties related to lockers, speedy pass and water park rentals
    • Assist with Point-of-Sale (POS) maintenance, including database programming and troubleshooting 
    • Participate in and conduct weekly department planning meetings 
    • Work directly with department heads to accomplish tasks
    • Assist with the set-up of merchandising for special events (e.g.  Oktoberfest, Phantom Fall Fest, Holiday Lights)
    • Participate in social activities with over one hundred international college students
    • All other duties assigned by leadership

    Education and Experience:

    • Recent graduate or at least 2+ years undergraduate study in Supply Chain, Hospitality, Business Management, Merchandising, or a related major.
    • 1+ years of previous work experience, preferably in a related role
    • Previous amusement park, theme park, or waterpark experience highly desired

    Language: Ability to read, write, and speak fluent English; Spanish or other bilingual language skills are a plus.
