ABOUT THIS PROGRAM:

The Creative Expression and Design program empowers students with foundational and advanced skills in visual and applied arts, preparing them for careers or post-secondary studies in fields such as interactive design, industrial design, multimedia design, interior design, fashion design, and virtual/immersive design.

Completers of this program will engage in four years of hands-on instruction and studio-based learning. Students will explore the principles of design, color theory, digital tools, and conceptual development. Projects are grounded in real-world applications, enabling students to build professional portfolios, collaborate on cross-disciplinary creative challenges, and gain exposure to diverse career paths within the creative industries.

Students will engage in career development experiences such as mentoring, studio visits, collaborative projects with local design professionals, post-secondary mentoring and coaching, and internship opportunities during the school year and summer.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the supervision of the school Principal, the Creative Expression and Design teacher leads an inspiring, inclusive classroom that fosters curiosity, originality, and personal growth. The teacher will guide students in developing visual literacy, conceptual thinking, technical skills, and design processes across traditional and digital platforms.

This role combines creative studio instruction with career readiness training, providing students with exposure to design-thinking methodologies and professional creative practices. The teacher maintains accurate records, meets educational standards, and cultivates a welcoming environment where every student’s ideas and identity are valued.

REPORTS TO:

Building Principal and Administrative Team and the District CTE Administrative Team

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach foundational and advanced topics in art and design through project-based learning.
  • Incorporate real-world creative industry experiences, including portfolio development, studio visits, and mentorships.
  • Foster an inclusive studio environment that encourages experimentation, self-expression, and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, community creatives, and cultural institutions to enhance student learning.
  • Establish and manage safe, organized studio and digital lab environments.
  • Guide students in preparing portfolios for college admissions, creative internships, and design competitions.
  • Assess and adapt instruction to meet diverse learning styles and developmental levels.
  • Maintain professional development in emerging design technologies and pedagogical practices.
  • Support student engagement through participation in student-led art/design exhibitions or CTE-related organizations.
  • Coordinate field experiences such as museum visits, workshops, and design firm tours.
  • Maintain equipment and manage classroom resources and materials.
  • Comply with all local and New York State educational requirements for Career and Technical Education pathways.
  • Participate in all CTE events both at the building and district level. 
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Art, Visual Arts, or a Design-related field, OR at least four years of verified professional experience in areas such as graphic design, product design, interior design, fashion, digital media, or related creative industries OR a current initial or professional teaching certificate in Art/Visual Arts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and a collaborative classroom culture.
  • Excellent communication skills and adaptability in a creative, student-centered learning environment.
  • Meet requirements to qualify for and then earn a transitional teacher certificate from the New York State Education Department, which permits the employment of an individual in a specific career and technical education title who does not meet the requirements for a standard certificate but possesses the requisite occupational experience and or post-secondary degree in content area.
