Function/Duties of Position
The successful candidate will work independently to investigate novel biosynthetic gene clusters and natural product metabolites of Streptococcus mutans. He/she will be responsible for design of research studies, procedures, implementation, and data interpretation associated with day-to-day operations in support of research goals and grant commitments in the laboratory. Monitors results, responds to unusual outcomes, develops and implements modifications to address any technical or design issue. Performs work of the highest difficulty using extensive knowledge in specialized field of study. Thus, the candidate will be expected to work independently with attention to detail and strong record-keeping. The goal is to understand how these metabolites impact childhood dental caries. Typical techniques often involved include bacterial mutagenesis, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Basic microbiology and molecular biology techniques required. Biofilm and work with a rat caries model will also be performed.
Demonstrable experience with these techniques is strongly preferred. As an SRA, the candidate will also be involved with the training and supervision of students and junior staff as well as play an integral role in the management and supply ordering for the laboratory. Assistance with the development and preparation of grants/manuscripts will also be expected.

Required Qualifications
- PhD in relevant Field (genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or another relevant field) and 1 years of relevant experience OR
- A Master's degree in relevant field (genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or another relevant field) and 5 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrable experience with all of the following: bacterial genetics, protein chemistry, proteomics, DNA/ RNA purification/analysis, gene expression/transcriptomics Grant and/or manuscript preparation experience Planning, implementation, and data interpretation experience Animal Experience, rats prefered
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Organizational and time management skills that maintain timeliness of work and accurate prioritization
- Ability to train and supervise students and junior staff
- Attention to detail and strong record keeping experience/skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience/knowledge of the microbiome, especially the oral flora
- Experience with oral bacterial and/or streptococcal genetics
- Experience with animal models
