Summary
Under general supervision, the Accountant I performs beginning level professional accounting work consistent with generally accepted accounting principles. Verifies arithmetic calculations, checks, postings and vouchers and controlling financial and accounting transactions in a computerized environment.
Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public 24 hours per day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand, and may be called in on short notice during power outages and other emergencies. Examples of duties
- Prepares journal vouchers and keypunches to the General Ledger to record monthly transactions.
- Reconciles schedules and verifies accuracy of recorded transactions.
- Maintains and creates excel spreadsheets to communicate various monthly activities of the Authority.
- Assists with the maintenance of subsidiary ledgers including gathering and compiling supporting documents to validate general ledger balances.
- Keypunches adjustments to subsidiary ledgers to correct transactions and balances when necessary.
- Maintains document files in compliance with retention policies.
- Assists the Authority's warehouse with physical count of the materials and supplies inventory by issuing and collecting batches, maintaining a batch log and keeping track of batches at all times.
- Keypunches all cleared batches to materials and supplies inventory subsidiary, review edits and investigates differences, and reconciles difference between the perpetual inventory and the physical count and records the necessary adjustments.
- Performs other related assignments as directed by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Ability to apply accounting principles to a variety of accounting transactions.
- Knowledge of PC and different software applications, including Excel.
- Ability to prepare accounting reports and statements.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships.
Supplemental information
Graduate of an accredited college or university with an Associate of Arts degree with at least eighteen (18) credits in accounting and three (3) years of accounting experience.
