Visual Features Fellowship (Summer 2023)

Are you always unearthing unusual stories? Do you have a passion for beautiful, gripping, and sometimes even gut-wrenching photos? 

Insider is looking for a visual features fellow to join our team. The ideal candidate will want to shed light on issues that matter and have a knack for framing stories and harnessing visuals that gets millions of people to care.

This job will focus on the production of visual features: stories that combine writing with images from our photo resources that help illustrate and contextualize the news of the day. Visual features may also be focused around more “evergreen” feature topics of interest to our audience. There may be opportunities for original photography and reporting. Stories could span politics, military, entertainment, tech, and more — whatever the biggest news happens to be that day.

You should be a self-starter who has a passion for finding and telling great stories. We value flexibility, creativity, accountability, and a diversity of ideas and opinions. We want someone who is excited about our mission to get better every day.

You could create stories like:

• I documented every surveillance camera on my way to work in New York City, and it revealed a dystopian reality
• Inside the 1966 Aberfan Disaster, one of Britain's most tragic mining disasters, where a collapsing mountain of coal waste killed 116 school children
• Stunning photos show what it's really like to work deep underground in an American coal mine
• Putin has 2 daughters he barely ever talks about, and is rumored to have at least 2 more

The ideal visual features fellow:

• Is an excellent storyteller — skilled at taking complex current events and presenting them in a compelling and relatable way
• Is insatiably curious about what’s happening in our own backyard and around the world, always asking questions and tracking down the answers to them
• Knows how to find and leverage the best photos to tell a compelling news story
• Produces clean, clear copy
• Has a demonstrated understanding of fact-checking and objective news writing
• Knows when and how to advance or contextualize a story with more reporting

All our editorial fellows should have:

• A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
• Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great!)
• Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
• Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience

The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers.

• Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
• PTO and paid holidays
• Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
