Job description
Butler University is expanding the student-led enterprise model which provides students valuable hands-on experience running a real business and making decisions. The Butler Thrift Store is going to be piloted in the 2024-2025 academic year through the Office of Sustainability. During this pilot, there will be a series of pop-up events to prove the viability of a more permanent enterprise. The student internship will serve as the initial Thrift Store Manager and be guided by a mentor committee composed of Lacy School of Business faculty. The student interns will develop transferable skills and professional development. There is full-year internship potential dependent on midterm and end-of-semester evaluations.
Paid ($13/hr) credit-earning position with an 8-10 hours per week minimum. Hours can be expanded to accommodate college internship credit requirements. If ineligible for internship credit, alternate curricular credit is available.
The internship responsibilities include:
Solicit clothing donations from students, faculty, and staff
Prep/Plan for Pop-up Events – Connect with Student Volunteer Groups (SGA, EcoReps, Retail Club, Greek Life, Green Grad Program), Clean/Prep Items, Develop Displays & Pricing signage, Plan Operations of Event
Prep for Payment through eCommerce
Track Key Performance Impact Data Points, Conduct Focus Groups/Surveys
# visitors, # sales, # pounds donated vs. sold, etc.
Marketing – Provide Sale-related Content to Social media Partners (EcoReps, or other Student Organization Socials), Butler Today & The Collegian
Collaborate with the Office of Sustainability Waste Intern to create Education/Communication to reduce clothing waste on campus
Assist with Grant applications for Spring/Future Funding
Attend monthly planning meetings with Mentor Committee either in-person or virtually
Required Qualifications
High interest in sustainability and environmental impact
Entrepreneurial spirit and mindset
Self-driven, ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, set priorities, exercise good judgment
Ability to collaborate and communicate with multiple partners including Mentor Committee, campus partners, other Office of Sustainability interns
Event Planning and Execution
Strong Organization Skills
Proficiency with MS Office including basic Excel data entry experience
Open to pivoting between high-level planning and strategic operational tasks
Comfort recruiting and organizing volunteers
Preferred Qualifications (or willingness to learn)
Business, communication, marketing, or environmental coursework
Customer-facing experiences
Money and inventory management
