Staff Software Engineer - Network Privacy Protocols
The Edge Protocols Team develops software that interacts with both sides of Fastly front and back - handling every incoming client request to Fastly, and talking to customers’ websites. Projects range from implementing new protocols, efficient load balancing, routing among the edge nodes, defending customers from attacks, security enhancements, and more. We expect this position to focus on enhancing our network privacy services. We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer passionate about applying their talents to make the Internet fast and secure.
What You'll Do
- Enhance and maintain Fastly’s privacy proxy service
- Implement new privacy preserving protocols such as those defined by the IEFT MASQUE (Multiplexed Application Substrate over QUIC Encryption) working group
- Optimize network protocols such as QUIC
- Write, test, and deploy C and Rust code
- Lead projects from design to deployment, working with other teams to deploy, support, troubleshoot, and deliver features to customers
- Contribute to open source projects such as h2o and picotl
Work Hours:
- This position will require you to be available during core business hours.
What We're Looking For
Basic Qualifications:
- You have at least 5 years of production experience with coding in C, C++, or Rust , and proficiency to implement reliable, scalable, low latency systems
- Additionally, you have 3 years of experience with Linux systems and network programming
- You have strong industry experience with Web/Internet protocols such as HTTP, TLS, DNS, TCP/IP, UDP, QUIC
- Hands-on experience in building distributed infrastructure and maintaining it over time
- Advanced knowledge of Linux as a development environment: git, compilers
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of privacy preserving mechanisms such as ODOH (oblivious DNS over HTTPS) and ECH (encrypted client hello)
- Comfortable working in a geographically distributed team and highly available environments
- Proficient in Perl, Go, or similar high level languages
Salary
The estimated salary range for this position is $169,000 to $245,000.
Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
