We are seeking a professional like you to play an integral role in the continued development and protection of the global patent portfolio, working under the oversight of the Director, Intellectual Property Operations NA. 

 

You will provide high-quality legal support in a timely and effective manner, acting as a pivotal link between the R&D, Business Development, and Intellectual Property teams. In addition, you will support the development and implementation of the BASF Global IP Strategy, working collaboratively with counterparts in the US, Germany, and other countries. You will identify and pursue valuable intellectual property generated in a dynamic research and development environment, working with the Care Chemicals, Dispersions and Pigments, Monomers, Performance Chemicals, and Performance Materials divisions, focusing on a wide variety of chemical compounds and industrial applications.  

During your time as a Senior Patent Agent you will…

 

• Manage a global patent portfolio in accordance with global IP strategies, obtain robust patent protection for critical technologies/products with limited to no supervision, act as IP project lead for individual research projects, global business units, and operating divisions and provide training on IP issues to R&D and business colleagues.
• Identify/articulate opportunities for patent protection, develop, advocate, and implement patent strategies and lead patent portfolio reviews with business units and operating divisions.
• Independently draft, file, and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO, including conducting examiner interviews and negotiations with the USPTO, with limited or no supervision.
• Directly manage and provide detailed filing and prosecution instructions and drafts to US and foreign patent counsel as well as conduct competitive analysis of patent portfolios with a detailed understanding of BASF products and technical developments.
• Conduct freedom to operate, infringement, validity, and other types of analyses under direction and supervision of counsel, align with business unit and operating division goals, and proactively seeking cost saving measures without compromising quality or patent scope and support patent-related due diligence for commercial transactions, such as collaborations and licensing.
• Effectively communicate with IP colleagues, businesses (e.g., IP Managers, management, R&D) in Germany and other global sites at all levels in the organization, regarding patent matters, departmental and overall BASF processes, and to proactively address other concerns.

If you...

 

• Have a background in Chemistry or Materials Science, registration before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, experience in IP and/or legal teams, and in-depth understanding of US and foreign patent laws.
• Own ability to work effectively in a changing environment, prioritize demands, and use keen judgment, while applying excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills.
• Are proficient in working with intellectual asset management software (e.g., Anaqua), USPTO Patent Center, and other patent systems.
• Possess experience in IP-related contracts, post-grant patent procedures, litigation, and patent-related due diligence, as well as practical laboratory experience.
