About the role

Job Summary: Performs general office work. Monitors dictation service and troubleshoots as necessary. Receives and opens mail. Answers telephone. Registers lab patients and specimens. Codes and files laboratory and pathology reports.  Assists pathologist with administrative needs.

 

Essential Job Duties:

General Laboratory:

  1. Answers phone calls for outpatient, inpatient, and outreach offices, as well as patient calls. 

  2. Acts as first line of contact for physician offices and other outreach locations.

  3. Assists with registration of outreach specimens.

  4. Calls critical values timely to provider offices.

  5. Screens phone calls for Lab Director, Pathologist, and Supervisors.

  6. Answers technical questions to the best of his/her knowledge.

  7. Assists the Office Supervisor in keeping the Lab Front Office neat and organized and sending all records to HIM.

 

Pathology:

  1. Processes send-out tests for the pathologist.

  2. Processes send-outs requested by providers to be sent to other facilities.

  3. Assists the pathologist with research studies as needed, providing scribe services, scheduling, etc..

  4. Assists the pathologist with administrative needs- scheduling, calendar upkeep, meetings, procedures, etc.

  5. Assists with monitoring of pathology turn-around-times.

  6. Assists with preparation of cases to be presented at Tumor Board and Cancer Conference.

  7. Troubleshoots the remote dictation service and the pathology computer system as needed.

  8. Assists with team building, staff morale, and intra- and inter-departmental communications.

Minimum Qualifications:
 

Education – Required:  High school graduate. Preferred:  Some college, including medical terminology.

Experience -- Secretarial training consisting of at least typing, computer use, use of office equipment, filing, etc.
