Executive Director, Pathology

The Role:

We are seeking a highly accomplished and experienced professional to join us as the Head of Pathology at Moderna. This executive director level position will be a key leadership role within our organization, responsible for overseeing and advancing the pathology function and interacting with leaders of multiple functions across the R&D organization. The successful candidate will play a critical role in driving the development and implementation of cutting-edge pathology strategies, ensuring the highest quality standards are met across our product portfolio, and guiding our platform technology and pipeline research.

Here’s What You Will Do:

• Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Pathology department, including regulatory and investigative pathology

• Lead and manage a team of pathologists, scientists, and technicians, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence, and continuous learning and development within the Pathology team, supporting career growth and professional development opportunities for team members

• Oversee the interpretation and analysis of pathology data, providing expert guidance and insights on both pipeline programs as well as discovery of novel platform technologies

• Communicate, collaborate, and build strong relationships with cross-functional leaders to support integrated scientific/clinical assessments of findings, identify key implications, and inform critical decisionsDrive the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new technologies, methodologies, and platforms within the pathology function, with particular emphasis on digitalization and utilization of AI/ML models.

• Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external partners, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with relevant regulations, guidelines, and best practices.

• Review appropriate sections of regulatory documents to support the filing of applications for clinical and commercial use, from IND to BLA, across vaccines and therapeutics  

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table

• DVM with or without Ph.D. in comparative pathology (ACVP board certification preferred), pharmacology and/or toxicology with 13 or more years spent overseeing all aspects of the Safety Assessment activities in pharmaceutical development.  Strong consideration will be given to those with experience in the evaluation of nucleic acid-based and nanoparticle tox/path.

• Significant contributions to the success of novel pharmaceutical agents with direct experience authoring study reports and appropriate sections of regulatory documents supporting applications for human dosing.

• Experience conducting outsourced GLP toxicology studies and interfacing with the scientific tox/path staffs at leading CRO’s.

• Significant experience interpreting clinical pathology data from preclinical studies

• Proven track record of successfully leading and managing pathology teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
