ROLE OVERVIEW:

This role oversees the recruitment, training, and evaluation of transportation drivers, ensuring strict compliance with all applicable safety and regulatory standards. This role is responsible for conducting road tests, developing and delivering driver training programs, supporting driver development through mentorship, and leading post-incident retraining to promote a culture of safety and operational excellence.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)

  1. Recruit and assist with the hiring of transportation drivers.
  2. Oversee road tests and provide behind-the-wheel driver training.
  3. Train new and existing team members on safe, efficient vehicle operation in compliance with DOT and company standards.
  4. Monitor and track driver training progress, including mentorship assignments.
  5. Evaluate drivers on operational procedures and safety practices.
  6. Assist with selection and assignment of experienced drivers as mentors.
  7. Instruct on daily pre-trip/post-trip inspections and vehicle recordkeeping.
  8. Serve as backup for the CDL training program.
  9. Promote and enforce a strong safety culture, including use of required safety equipment.
  10. Conduct job site hazard assessments and assist with corrective actions, and provide refresher guidance for drivers assigned to new job sites or unfamiliar tasks such as pumping.
  11. Provide consistent post‑incident retraining for drivers, completed either independently or with a mentor driver, and assess whether adjustments or reductions to specific tasks are appropriate
  12. Maintain positive customer relations at job sites.
  13. Assist with DOT-required paperwork and audit driver logs for compliance.
  14. Support the safety team with vehicle monitoring system compliance.
  15. Ensure DOT, MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
  16. Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)

  1. Commitment to safety culture and ability to champion safety initiatives.
  2. Strong judgment in assessing job site hazards and implementing corrective actions.
  3. Clear communication skills for training and safety discussions.
  4. Strong customer service skills for maintaining job site relationships.
  5. Excellent organizational skills to manage documentation and training programs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)

  1. Knowledge of DOT regulations and transportation industry standards.
  2. Understanding of commercial vehicle operation requirements.
  3. Ability to hold and maintain proper licensure and an acceptable driving record (e.g., valid Class A or B CDL and medical card).
  4. Previous truck driving experience.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (preferred requirements i.e. certifications, software use, etc.)

  1. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the transportation industry.
  2. Experience in training and development.
  3. Familiarity with electronic logging devices and vehicle inspection protocols.
