About the role

Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Manager, Community Building is responsible for statewide efforts to engage, activate, and grow Audubon California’s network, including with community and campus chapters, members, community-based organizations, and other key audiences. Reporting to the Conservation Director, the Manager, Community Building will coordinate with staff to ensure a strong chapter program, communicate with supporters, engage members in our work, grow our audiences, and support community-based initiatives that advance bird conservation. The manager will work closely with national community building and chapter staff to ensure consistency across the network and alignment with Audubon’s strategic plan (Flight Plan). Working with the policy and conservation directors and other team members, they will develop strategies to successfully engage our bipartisan network and conservation partners for successful policy campaigns and conservation leadership. They will ensure high-quality communications that strengthen and grow our network, raise the profile of Audubon, and move our strategic priorities forward.

    

The ideal candidate will be a skilled, experienced project manager and strategic thinker, with a background in working with communities, campaigns, and collaborative partnerships.

This position is an on-site based at the National Audubon Society’s Oakland, CA state office.

Compensation:

$76,000-$86,000 / year

Additional Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and execute a chapter engagement strategy, outline communication and program structures to support chapters, and identify tools needed to support chapters in aligning with National Audubon Society.

  • Build and manage a capacity-building and partnership program for the Audubon chapter network, including developing training programs and creating unique partnerships with high-capacity chapters.

  • Connect and activate chapters to engage with Audubon’s conservation programs, community science efforts, and advocacy priorities.

  • Support and engage college and university chapters in key geographies throughout the region, in coordination with the Audubon on Campus program.

  • Work with leadership and staff to support their engagement with chapters, including helping to plan and implement gatherings and meetings. Join and potentially organize chapter meetings and other events.

  • Partner with California’s conservation and public policy stakeholders to recruit, equip, and engage advocates and volunteers to advance our conservation work, advocacy, issue campaigns, outreach, and influence-building.

  • Partner with program teams to support community engagement efforts, audience identification, and strategic outreach activities.

  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and justice principles are incorporated into our work.

  • Assist with raising funds through individuals and foundations to support chapter and other network programming; manage grants specific to network programs.

  • Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas including through joint planning and execution of shared priorities.

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of communications strategies.

  • Raise the visibility and influence of Audubon, network, and chapters, including through social media, action alerts, success stories, and other channels.

  • Develop and execute gatherings and other events that deliver on our communications and programmatic goals.

  • Build communications initiatives and campaigns to engage and grow key audiences.

  • Identify and build partnerships to help advance Audubon’s goals.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years’ relevant experience in community engagement, communications, grassroots advocacy, public service, or related field. A combination of education and experience will also be considered.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus. Comfortable with presenting and engaging others in public-speaking events is also necessary.

  • Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to motivate volunteers and partners essential.

  • Proven experience networking with, engaging, and successfully cultivating diverse community partners and partnership projects,
