This Opportunity
WSP has a career opportunity for a Lead Mining Engineer with our Lakewood, CO office. This individual will be involved in projects with our Mine Engineering and Stability Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Your Impact
- As the technical lead, mentor and develop high performing surface and underground hard-rock mine design and planning teams
- Identify, develop, and follow through on new business opportunities.
- Perform and lead strategic modeling, design and mine engineering technical projects with a focus on open‑pit and underground hard rock mine design and sequencing utilizing various mine modeling software packages
- Conduct and lead a full range of surface and underground hard rock mine engineering functions, including:
- Detailed mine design
- Engineering trade-off studies
- Cost estimation and economic analysis of alternatives
- Preparation of technical documents including public disclosure documents for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (S-K 1300, NI 43-101, JORC)
- Support both the engineering and geologic aspects of projects as necessary.
- Apply WSP’s Project Management standards to manage all aspects of projects.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and technical staff to develop the skills and procedures needed to effectively deliver engineering and consulting assignments.
- Serve as an internal technical resource and provide guidance and mentorship to junior-level staff.
- Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mining engineering or closely related field
- Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
- A minimum of 12 years relevant post education experience in open‑pit and underground hard rock engineering with an emphasis on underground hard rock mine planning, design and scheduling
- Experience as a consulting hard rock mining engineer and/or with a technical services role in hard rock engineering (open‑pit and underground) within a mining company
- Possess strong business development skills to identify, maintain and expand client portfolio
- Strong English technical writing skills with experience writing proposals and technical reports.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and strategic planning skills
- Experience utilizing mine planning, design and scheduling software packages such as MineSight Mineplan, Vulcan, Deswik, Datamine, etc.
- Understand the key technical requirements and deliverables required for pre-feasibility and feasibility studies related to mining and public disclosure documents (NI 43-101, S-K 1300, JORC).
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
- Works independently to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Experience with providing critical review for documents and preparing technical deliverables and plans with a high degree of complexity.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
