Job Description Summary
The nursing unit Supervisor is responsible for the coordination and supervision of patient and unit activity on a designated shift. The Supervisor provides clinical leadership on a specific shift and serves as a role model, resource, and clinical expert for personnel. The Supervisor contributes to nursing and the hospital through the support of the mission, vision, and values, as well as the performance objectives and nursing strategic plan.
Job Description
Essential Functions
Employee Engagement
- Serves as a role model, mentor, and coach for employees.
- Provides input to the Director and/or Nurse Manager in the interviewing and hiring process of new employees.
- In conjunction with the Director, Nurse Manager, and staff, completes annual evaluations for assigned personnel and ensures validation of clinical competencies for self and staff within established time constraints.
- Participates in employee coaching, as well as in the disciplinary process when indicated.
- Adheres to established appearance, attendance, and punctuality policy and ensures staff adherence.
- Demonstrates respect for employees and values employee input and feedback.
- Elicits feedback and ideas from employees in assignment distribution and patient care processes.
- Demonstrates commitment and fosters teamwork to achieve unit and hospital objectives.
- Communicates openly and effectively with staff and leaders.
- Demonstrates a sense of responsibility and accountability for unit and hospital appearance.
- Demonstrates professional behavior in interactions with physicians, staff, and hospital leaders.
- Demonstrates support of education and students in the clinical and healthcare setting.
- Actively participates in patient care “huddles” providing input regarding patient care needs, barriers to patient transitions of care, and other relevant issues.
- Fosters and practices collegiality among nursing staff and between nursing and medical staff.
- Assumes responsibility for professional growth by attending appropriate meetings, workshops, and/or educational offerings.
Patient Satisfaction
- In conjunction with the Director and Nurse Manager maintains accountability for patient satisfaction.
- Acts as a role model by performing effective leader rounding on assigned shift.
- Supports and ensures staff compliance in tactics to promote and improve patient satisfaction such as, but not limited to:
- Completion of “white boards”
- Scripting
- Hourly rounding
- Bedside handoff reporting
- Seeks Director and Nurse Manager feedback from weekly accountability meetings.
- Holds assigned staff accountable for unit and hospital objectives and action plans.
- Demonstrates friendly and approachable behavior by engaging in eye contact and verbal interaction with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
- Demonstrates support of staff and leadership in interactions with patient and family.
- Follows up on patient complaints and/or grievances in a timely manner and completes appropriate documentation within the specified time frame.
Quality
- Serves as a clinical resource and expert to assist nursing personnel in the assessment of patient and family status and the coordination of nursing care, patient and family education, discharge planning, etc.
- Participates in performance improvement activities as requested.
- In conjunction with unit leaders and staff, formulates corrective action plans for areas of noncompliance.
- Ensures compliance with plans; provides feedback to Director and/or Nurse Manager as indicat4ed.
- In conjunction with the Director and Nurse Manager, maintains accountability for performance measures on assigned shift.
- Demonstrates transparency by communicating/sharing performance measures openly with staff, patients, and families.
- Ensures that staff competency measures have been completed as required.
- In conjunction with the Director and Nurse Manager, completes staff performance evaluations in a timely manner, as assigned.
- Completes own competency and educational requirements in a timely manner, as required.
- Ensures appropriate patient care assignments for assigned shift to facilitate quality patient care and positive outcomes.
- Monitors and evaluates performance of Charge Nurses and staff.
- Follows established infection prevention policies and processes.
- Adheres to established policies and procedures in emergent and non-emergent situations.
