Job Description

As our portfolio of healthcare projects continues to expand across the UK, Ireland (ROI and NI), and globally, AECOM is growing its UK+I Healthcare Architecture team. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join us at Associate Director level as a Senior Medical Planner, to help shape the future of healthcare design.

This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in leading and strengthening our award-winning specialist Healthcare Architecture team, part of our UK+I Architecture + Design Studio – proudly ranked 10th largest architectural practice in the UK (AJ100 Survey 2025).

At AECOM, you’ll be part of a truly global, multidisciplinary practice, working alongside engineers, planners, project managers, and sustainability experts. You’ll lead the medical design of major hospitals and healthcare facilities across a variety of typologies, acting as a trusted advisor to clients, clinicians, and stakeholders. You will drive success through thought leadership, collaboration, and design excellence.

We’re looking for a candidate with extensive healthcare design experience, a proven track record in the UK and Ireland, and international exposure to large-scale healthcare projects. Above all, you will combine rigorous medical planning expertise with a strong architectural sensibility – delivering projects that are not only functionally efficient, but also uplifting for patients, staff, and communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead medical planning across all project stages, including master planning, blocking and stacking, departmental layouts, and detailed 1:50 room loadings.
  • Champion thought leadership in healthcare design, contributing to research, publications, and innovation across the practice.
  • Engage with stakeholders – leading workshops, design reviews, and client presentations to ensure clinical and operational requirements are embedded into design solutions.
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level planners, building capacity and promoting best practice within the team.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to deliver integrated solutions that align medical planning with architectural design quality, sustainability, and operational performance.
  • Promote design excellence, ensuring that healthcare projects at AECOM move beyond functional efficiency to create humane, healing environments.

Qualifications

About you

  • Extensive experience in healthcare design, with at least 5 years in a senior medical planning role.
  • Demonstrable leadership in planning hospitals and complex healthcare facilities within the UK and Ireland.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating integration of functional planning and architectural design.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • RIBA Chartered Architect (or equivalent professional registration).

If would be great if you had

  • Experience of international healthcare projects and delivery of large-scale hospital developments.
  • Evidence of thought leadership through publications, presentations, or active research.
  • Postgraduate degree or specialisation in medical planning (or equivalent demonstrable expertise).
  • Familiarity with global healthcare standards and ability to adapt UK best practice to international contexts.

Personal Attributes

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to influence at project, client, and industry levels.
  • Collaborative leader who inspires trust and builds consensus.
  • Strong design sensibility with a commitment to delivering healthcare environments that improve human experience.
  • Passionate about healthcare and motivated by AECOM’s mission to deliver a better world.
