POSITION SUMMARY
The HUMAN RESOURCES GENERALIST supports the Sheriff’s Office by performing a wide range of professional HR duties that ensure effective personnel management, compliance with federal/state employment laws, and alignment with agency policies and procedures. This role is central to maintaining a well-functioning workforce. The HUMAN RESOURCES GENERALIST serves as a resource to employees and supervisors, assists with recruitment and retention, manages sensitive personnel matters, and contributes to a positive, accountable workplace culture.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Recruitment & Staffing
Coordinate full-cycle recruitment for sworn, detention, and civilian positions, including job postings, applicant screening, interview scheduling, and background documentation collection.

Maintain applicant tracking systems and ensure timely communication with candidates.

Participate in job fairs, community outreach events, and departmental recruitment initiatives.

Onboarding & Orientation
Facilitate new-hire onboarding, ensuring completion of all required documentation, credential verification, and policy acknowledgments.

Conduct HR orientation sessions covering benefits, workplace expectations, ethics, and Sheriff’s Office procedures.

Employee Relations
Assist supervisors with corrective action processes, documentation, and performance improvement plans.

Ensure confidentiality and adherence to legal and departmental standards.

Promote positive employee engagement through communication, recognition programs, and wellness initiatives.

Compliance & Policy Administration
Ensure HR practices comply with federal and state employment laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, HIPAA) and local civil service rules.

Maintain knowledge of law-enforcement-specific regulations, including POST standards, detention staffing mandates, and background check requirements.

Assist with policy updates, distribution, and training related to HR and workplace conduct.

Maintain accurate and secure personnel files in accordance with retention laws and agency policy.

Benefits & Leave Management
Guide employees through enrollment, qualifying life events, and benefits questions.

Manage leave programs such as FMLA, military leave, workers’ compensation, and workplace accommodations.

Coordinate with risk management on injury claims and return-to-work processes.

Payroll & HRIS Support
Assist with payroll processing, timekeeping audits, and corrections for sworn and professional staff.

Maintain employee data in HRIS systems, ensuring accuracy in job classifications, pay grades, certifications, and assignments.

Training & Professional Development
Coordinate employee training sessions related to HR topics.

Support career development initiatives.

Reporting & Data Management
Prepare HR reports, metrics, and dashboards related to staffing, turnover, overtime, demographics, and compliance.

Assist with audits, accreditation processes, and data requests from command staff or external agencies.

Maintain confidentiality and ensure secure handling of sensitive information.


QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, or related field preferred.
2–5 years of professional HR experience; public safety or government experience strongly preferred.
Professional HR Certification strongly preferred.
Experience with recruitment, employee development, and HR compliance required.
Strong understanding of employment law, HR best practices, and public-sector HR processes.
Familiarity with public safety hiring standards, POST requirements, and background investigations.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with discretion.
Proficiency in HRIS systems, Microsoft Office, and applicant tracking platforms.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
