Job Description Summary

The Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center is seeking a Senior Data Analyst to support the Center’s data acquisition efforts for large pragmatic and comparative effectiveness trials and observational cohort studies. The Senior Data Analyst must demonstrate a strong understanding of research concepts and data structures in the healthcare setting and be able to discuss both technical requirements and study design considerations effectively with collaborators external to the PAIR Center. They will be embedded within project teams to develop, document, and execute data workflows, from protocol implementation and data collection planning, to conducting data quality checks. This individual will also be responsible for establishing data use agreements (DUAs) on behalf of the Center; planning for data transfer, preservation, and destruction; and maintaining complete documentation.

Job Responsibilities

Regularly engage with external and internal stakeholders to acquire data in appropriate structure and detail to meet research goals, including communicating technical requirements, developing data management protocols, writing scripts to perform data quality checks and process data based on standards developed by the PAIR data core, updating documentation to reflect changes in data processing steps and analytic plans, and establishing data use agreements.

Liaise with internal stakeholders (e.g., PSOM faculty and Penn Medicine leaders) to translate and link conceptual research questions to discrete data elements available in the EHR; compose and validate complex SQL queries to retrieve health data according to real-life clinical documentation patterns

Develop and test study databases and create flowcharts and other presentation aids.
