Job Summary

As a key member of the University's social media and online communications team, the Social Media Specialist is responsible for helping to manage social media channels and creating content for the online News blog and online versions of print publications. This position consequently is crucial in contributing to the quality and consistency of ISU's external communications. The Specialist conveys the University's overall excellence and endeavors through compelling content and creative storytelling that engages external audiences, which include prospective students, parents, alumni, donors, retirees, and friends of the University.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$50,000 - $58,000 annual

Required Qualifications

1 Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, digital media, public relations, or a closely related field.
2. One (1) year full-time or part-time equivalent marketing experience which included managing social media channels for an organization, editing video, and creating motion graphics.
3. Thorough knowledge of Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube.
4. Demonstrated experience using social media management tools such as Asana or Sprout.
5. Skill with a phone for photography and video.
6. Ability to respond appropriately to comments and messages posted to social media channels.
7. Ability to create Instagram slides and other social media graphics using Canva or other programs.


*Note: Students in the final semester of a Bachelor’s Degree program may be allowed to complete a credential assessment examination and will receive full consideration, including being interviewed. An offer may be extended with understanding that proof of degree based on institution is provided to the employing institution Human Resources Office at least two weeks before the proposed start date.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Two years in full-time role creating social media content.
2. Ability to gather information through video interviews and put together clear and concise video features to engage targeted audiences.
3. Ability to connect with key audiences through online outlets.
4. Ability to work under deadline pressure and with a high degree of accuracy.
5. Working knowledge of The Associated Press Stylebook.
6. Ability to work with a committee structure and in partnership with multiple clients/offices on projects.
7. Ability to comfortably interact with individuals in the campus community and the general public.
8. Demonstrated experience using analytics to develop and evaluate online content.
9. Ability to stay up-to-date with trends in social media and to find creative ways to keep Illinois State University channels current with the online environment.
10. Knowledge of Illinois State University, its history, and its traditions.

Work Hours

Core work hours are 8am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend availability required.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

2. Ability to distinguish colors on a monitor.
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
4. Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.
