JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Senior Director of Tax will oversee all income tax aspects for Greystar’s Development and Construction business. This role offers flexibility with the option to work remotely or from any Greystar US office location. The position is key to the company's growth strategy, providing leadership, management, and advisory services on tax matters across the Development and Construction team. Candidates should have at least ten years of tax experience, including expertise in real estate partnerships and REITs, as well as experience managing acquisitions and dispositions. A background in a large public accounting firm or equivalent experience in private industry is required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the tax function for the Development and Construction business.
  • Collaborate with legal and business teams on transactions and manage investor tax relations with senior stakeholders on complex matters involving both internal and external partners.
  • Direct and manage the local tax function and risks in alignment with Global Tax Policy.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in partnership taxation, real estate REITs, and structuring acquisitions and dispositions.
  • Prior experience with multifamily real estate is desirable.
  • Review partnership and joint venture agreement requirements.
  • Work with external tax advisors to assess new tax laws and provide guidance to the Development team on relevant impacts.
  • Ensure timely and accurate management of income tax issues related to Development and Construction, supporting real estate transactions, compliance, and corporate matters. Includes managing annual tax compliance requirements.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors for quarterly investor income tax forecasts, estimated payments, and tax withholding on dividends/distributions.
  • Provide quarterly and annual income tax budgets and accruals to accounting teams for both corporate entities and investment joint ventures.
  • Coordinate and supervise external tax advisers for deal structuring, acquisition due diligence, asset dispositions, and investor tax reporting.
  • Work with external advisors to manage tax audits, notices, and dispute resolution.
  • Review and manage the quarterly tax provision prepared by external advisors.

Knowledge & Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience with a nationally recognized Big 4 CPA firm or private industry tax team specializing in real estate is required.
  • Senior management experience in leading a tax team.
  • CPA or a master’s degree in taxation is required.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and a commercial approach to problem-solving and providing advice.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience in real estate partnerships and REITs is required. Multifamily experience is a plus.
  • Experience in transaction structuring and due diligence.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, transaction-driven environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of income tax accounting.
