POSITION SUMMARY: The Math 1-2-1 Graduate Assistant will have program organization and mentoring responsibilities and serve as a key member of the Math 1-2-1 program at the Claremont Colleges.
Math 1-2-1 is a free, 6-week online summer program designed to prepare incoming Pomona College freshmen and transfer students for the pace of college-level mathematics and important connections before arriving on campus.
The program employs several Pomona undergraduate teaching assistants, who oversee 2-3 mentor groups each. TAs lead weekly study sessions with each of their groups. The small group study sessions are designed to support students through challenging math problem sets assigned by program faculty. TAs also hold drop-in office hours, provide mentorship and advice, communicate offline, and help plan online social events.
The Math 1-2-1 Graduate Assistant provides support to undergraduate teaching assistants and assists with program organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Assistant Director for the Quantitative Skills Center, the Math 1-2-1 Graduate Assistant works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
Program Organization
- Provide technological assistance for Canvas, Zoom, and other software
- Assist with scheduling regular and special events
- Support and participate in staff meetings, faculty lectures, and department information sessions
- Support the development of program assessment
Teaching Assistant Support
- Support coordination and implementation of TA orientation
- Lead a weekly TA meeting
- Hold drop-in office hours for TAs
- Provide scheduling support for TAs and mentor groups
- Communicate frequently with TAs, providing check-ins and reminders
- Support TAs with problem-set feedback
- Fill in for absent TAs
- Act as liaison between TAs and program administrators
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required; candidate should currently be in an advanced degree program in math or related field. Experience with teaching or mentoring, liberal arts residential colleges, and/or Claremont Colleges is preferred. The candidate must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge, skills and abilities not listed below.
- Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and analytical skills
- Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint), and experience with Tableau or other analytical/assessment software preferred.
- Handle all activities and highly confidential information with professionalism, patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College’s strategic vision and the division’s/department’s annual goals.
REQUIRED HOURS: To be determined with the candidate. Weekend and evening work hours may be required. Travel to regional meetings may be required.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: Temporary 40 hours per week, non-exempt position. The hourly rate for this role is $38.00 to $42.00 per hour. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior role.
