Responsibility & Authority

The Transportation Safety Manager creates, implements, and audits safety programs that are compliant with federal and state regulations including Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The Transportation Safety Manager works closely with leaders and team members to understand the work processes and to identify and proactively address hazards and risks through risk assessments and PPE analysis. The Transportation Safety Manager is responsible for setting goals and for developing strategy to continually improve safety for drivers. The Transportation Safety Manager assigns the appropriate training and works with leaders and team members to ensure that training is completed.

Requirements

Minimum Position Requirements (Skills & Abilities)

  • Expert knowledge of OSHA and other safety related requirements
  • Expert knowledge of DOT and FMCSA requirements
  • Demonstrated work experience: building management systems, conducting incident investigations, training, auditing, implementing compliance and safety programs
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint
  • Maintains training records and other OSHA, DOT and FMCSA records
  • Support and assist with cause investigations and track corrective action with Human Resources

Essential Functions

  • Conduct OSHA and DOT onsite safety training for truck drivers.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Physical Demands

A Transportation Safety Manager can work in any range of environments, from a climate-controlled space to environments where temperatures can vary from extreme cold to extreme heat. Safety & Maintenance Managers must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time (up to 12 hours) on unpadded floors and will continuously be required to bend, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, push/pull and grasp. Additionally, Safety Managers will routinely be required to lift or carry up to 30 - 50 lbs. Eye/hand coordination and repetitive use of both hands/arms is required. Exposure to chemical hazards, electrical hazards, sharp objects/tools, noise and vibration are anticipated.


Tools & Equipment Used

  • Handheld scanning devices and other data collection tools
  • Excel, Outlook, Word, Power Point and WMS inventory management systems
  • Various maintenance tools, including repair instruments and those powered by air pressure
  • Radios, mirrors, flashlights, micrometers, tape measures, dyes, paints, chemical cleaners, rulers, gauges, micrometers, calipers, hand tools, power tools, air tools, steel toed footwear, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, and any other tools and equipment required per customer request

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a Safety or Logistics related field is highly preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in a similar role is required.
  • OSHA, DOT and FMCSA training is required.

Work Experience

3+ years of previous leadership experience in a transportation environment is required.
