Software Solutions General Manager

The preferred locations for this position will be Emeryville, California or Herndon, Virginia. This role with be on hybrid or in-office schedule. Working remotely will be option depending on where the elected candidate resides.

 

What will you be doing:

As the Software Solutions General Manager, you will lead the growth of Wartsila’s Energy Storage & Optimization (ES&O) global software business. Your role will begin with the development of the business case for growth, and then will shift to implementing that business plan across the organization, with direct accountability for the maturation of our software product offerings and their commercial readiness. You will work closely with our product management, strategic solution development, marketing, hardware and software engineering, data science, operations, legal and finance teams. This role will have a high degree of visibility and exposure to the ES&O executive management team.

 

The ideal candidate has at least 10 years, or at least 4 years post-MBA, of experience in software-as-a-service business development, strategy, product management, or other commercial roles, with a strong preference for that experience having been in the renewable energy and/or electric power sector. As this will be a cross-functional role, a collaborative approach to your work and demonstrated experience working with multiple teams on simultaneous projects is also required. You will be a part of the Strategic Market Development team at ES&O, which is a growing team comprised of results-oriented and highly collaborative energy storage experts leading ES&O’s global commercial strategy.

 

As the Software Solutions General Manager, your primary responsibilities will be:

· To build and manage business planning for our software business, including customer and competitive market analysis, market sizing, business planning, and strategic segmentation and targeting efforts.

· To define and deliver, together with the software product management team, sales-ready software and software-as-a-service solutions in line with that business plan, including the development of thoughtful and competitively differentiating pricing approaches.

· To manage cross-organizational business readiness for a growth-focused energy storage and optimization software business, including legal, marketing, sales operations, product operations, delivery, and financial aspects.

· To maintain an ongoing global software product commercial strategy, including competitive benchmarking and positioning, market-specific strategy, and new product opportunity identification that drives the product management team’s long-term roadmaps.

· To collaborate with your teammates and colleagues to spread best practices and knowledge between regions.

 

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

· At least 10 years, or 4 years post-MBA, of relevant experience.

· Experience in the development and launch of SaaS business models, preferably in the electric power and/or renewable energy sector.

· Specific experience in grid scale energy storage, power flexibility optimization, or energy asset management software solutions is highly valued.

· Experience developing dynamic and/or value generation-based pricing models and tooling for AI/ML based SaaS solutions is a plus.

· Strong project and process management skills with experience managing cross-functional teams on simultaneous projects without managerial control.

· Excellent interpersonal, leadership and collaboration skills.

· MBA strongly preferred; bachelor’s degrees with commensurate experience will also be considered.

· The flexibility to travel approximately 10-20%, both within the US and international travel.

· As this is a global role, the flexibility to work across multiple time zones is important; expectations of your work schedule will be commensurately flexible to accommodate personal obligation
