Purpose
Working with the Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings, and European Art, the Assistant Curator is responsible for overseeing an encyclopedic collection of more than 17,000 works on paper in the Blanton's collection, including managing a very active study room, and cataloguing, care, research and storage.
Responsibilities
Manage the Julia Matthews Wilkinson Center for Prints and Drawings
Supervise proper storage, housing, and conservation of works on paper collection.
Encourage and facilitate use of Wilkinson Center resources in teaching among university faculty and staff across campus as well as other Austin communities and audiences.
Develop checklists for class visits; monitor the study room while artwork is on view for classes or general visits.
Instruct classes visiting the H-E-B Study Room about techniques and media related to works on paper, and share art historical expertise as it relates to the Blanton’s collection.
Collaborate closely with Education department to support class visits to the H-E-B Study Room
Curate Pop-Up exhibitions in the H-E-B Study Room, and liaise with Education, PR and Marketing, and Collections and Exhibitions departments.
Field inquiries and assist with projects of outside researchers, university students and curatorial interns.
Assist in supervising staff, interns, and fellows.
Research and Curatorial Activities
Perform ongoing research and cataloguing of the collection and new acquisitions.
Help Associate Curator and other curatorial staff organize Paper Vault exhibitions and assist Associate Curator in planning larger exhibitions in the Blanton's main special exhibition galleries.
Assist in the development and production of interpretive strategies and materials as they relate to exhibition projects.
Collaborate with the Director of Education and Academic Affairs and other museum staff in the creation of program content and participate in program activities as related to the print and drawing collection.
Assist in training gallery teachers and gallery assistants in specific content areas and museum practices.
Draft appropriate texts for museum publications and gallery labels in various formats.
Assist in the coordination of scholarly seminars.
May contribute to scholarship in field of expertise.
Interact with Board members and collectors as necessary.
Marginal/Incidental functions

Required Qualifications
Master's degree in art history.
Two years museum experience.
Demonstrated specialty in early modern European works on paper with working knowledge across the history of printmaking.
Reading ability in either French, Italian, Spanish or German
Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal and management skills.
Collaborative, collegial, creative, independent and resourceful in work.
Demonstrated integrity in all professional matters. Willingness to work proactively with students of all ages, docents, volunteers, academic and university colleagues and general audiences.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Salary Range
$54,000 + depending on qualifications.
