Description

We are welcoming candidates for a dynamic scholar and teacher to the join the Department of Communication Arts. Gordon College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant or associate professor of communication to complement and expand our work in rhetoric, film, media studies, journalism, and strategic communication. Position to begin August 2018. Rank will be commensurate with experience.

The Department of Communication Arts at Gordon College is the fifth largest major on campus with over 100 students and four faculty members (three full-time and one part-time). Located in the Division of Fine Arts, the Communication Arts department values the intersection of theory and practice. Our students take classes in visual storytelling, communication theory, digital media, rhetorical criticism, documentary film, and journalism. Our graduates work in a variety of roles applying their communication skills and critical perspectives, including in public relations, social media, print journalism, advertising, nonprofit management, digital media, film (writing, producing, editing), corporate communications, and graduate programs in production and criticism.

A successful candidate for this position will value the role of communication in the Christian liberal arts; display a passion for scholarship and the teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students; and demonstrate a spirit of collegiality and value for diversity in a small department that is positioning itself for future growth. Some experience in one of the following areas is preferred: civic communication and rhetoric; digital media; or film theory and production.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • a doctorate or appropriate terminal degree completed by the time of appointment;
  • a passion for teaching and mentoring students;
  • a demonstrated mature Christian faith and strong commitment to the Christian mission of the college;
  • a value for diversity and inclusion as demonstrated in their teaching and scholarship;
  • collaborative skills that cross departmental and disciplinary boundaries;
  • a commitment to integrating undergraduate research into their own research agenda;
  • full-time classroom teaching experience;
  • and a spirit of collegiality and sense of humor.
