The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design and modification of mechanical components used in new or existing products for electricity meters and related products. The role is the team lead in mechanical design and involves coaching and mentoring employees in this area. The role is also responsible for producing drawings for use in the manufacture of components and products.
Handles complicated R&D hardware, firmware, software, and completes solutions projects as part of a cross-functional team. Collaborates with Product Management, Project management and other R&D teams in design, development, and validation of complete Smart Grid solutions. Collaborates with SMEs and business partners on component and system design.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical product design responsibilities for all design requirements in a product development cycle including Conception to Production.
- Consult with Product and Program Managers to clarify product uses cases, requirements, and specifications.
- Mechanical design of components for meter products and accessories to meet product specifications.
- Modify existing designs to incorporate new features or meet new requirements.
- Prototype manufacture and evaluation including DFM, DFMEA, and product testing.
- Mechanical aspects of product compliance testing.
- Component specification, selection, and test.
- Coordinate development of Product tooling, evaluation, and approvals.
- Assist with production equipment design and production process definition.
- Consult with Production Engineers and other personnel to resolve issues related to mechanical design of products.
- Perform mechanical system and component design utilizing solid modeling CAD tools.
- Create detailed drawings of parts and assemblies utilizing CAD tools.
- Calculate and lay out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, and relationship of various parts to entire structure.
- Responsible for ensuring mechanical development is created per schedule and per cost objectives.
- Generate BOMs and ECOs.
- Involved with a project/product at its infancy and support development products into production ready capacity.
- Trouble shoot and find corrective actions for "in the field" products that may experience failures.
- Proficient in component and/or solution design, development, documentation, and validation.
- Work on agile development teams, collaborating with multiple cross-discipline architecture teams to develop hardware and software components as part of L+G Smart Grid solutions.
- Participate in recruitment, development and mentoring of junior engineers.
- Proficient in area-specific continuous improvement initiatives
- Contribute to innovative technology and solutions development and/or validation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to use 2D and 3D CAD systems (Creo and SolidWorks is preferred)
- Proficient with Pro/Engineering and/or SolidWorks
- Experience in design applications requiring environmental sealing, EMI sealing, thermal dissipation, and vibration loads.
- Proficient with Pro/Engineering and/or SolidWorks
- Proficiency with development processes, tools, and related frameworks.
- Proficiency with relevant development and/or validation methodologies.
- Deep knowledge of AMI and Smart Grid Systems and Solutions.
- Advanced design, development, or validation skills In functional area.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, and good negotiation skills.
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong problem solving and time management skills
- Understanding of Manufacturing Processes
