About the Role:

The New York Times is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the NYT Cooking Apps team. NYT Cooking helps you discover and cook the world’s best recipes. We are tight knit and interdisciplinary — we collaborate with our design, data, product, and editorial partners to prototype, develop and scale new features for both our responsive website and mobile apps. We are made up of small, focused groups tasked with building great cooking experiences on a variety of devices and platforms, including web, iOS and Android. This will be a hybrid position and you will report to the Engineering Manager, Cooking Tech. 

What You'll Do:

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the NYT Cooking Apps team, you will be pivotal in optimizing and evolving our Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL backend, building new features, and enhancing performance and observability. Your role involves collaborating on the transition to a federated GraphQL architecture using TypeScript / Node.js and leading the integration with core NYTimes services. You will also play a vital role in shaping our cloud infrastructure, leveraging modern cloud platforms for scalable and resilient deployment and contributing to the implementation and refinement of our CI/CD pipelines. You'll play a key part in cross-functional teams, providing mentorship, and steering our backend infrastructure towards future advancements, all while contributing to one of the most esteemed digital culinary platforms.

Basic Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience in backend development, with a focus on designing and managing read-heavy systems.
• Experience with GraphQL, TypeScript / Node.js and integrating or migrating to GraphQL architectures.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails. 
• Experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases.
• Strong understanding of RESTful API development and performance optimization.
• Experience in observability tools for monitoring and logging.
• Experience working in cross-functional teams and effectively communicating with team members across various disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Deep understanding of system design, scalability challenges, and performance optimization, especially in environments dealing with high volumes of data and read-heavy operations.
• Contributions to large-scale projects and experience in balancing trade-offs between performance, scalability, and maintainability.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:$140,000—$155,000 USD
