The Role
At QuidelOrtho, we’re advancing the power of diagnostics for a healthier future for all. Join our mission as our next Electrical Engineer I. This position supports the design, development, and validation of electronic hardware systems throughout the product lifecycle. The role works collaboratively with senior engineers across electrical, optical, and mechanical disciplines to ensure accurate documentation, effective problem resolution, and timely project execution.
This role will be onsite in Rochester, NY.
The Responsibilities
Assist in the design, layout, and documentation of printed circuit boards (PCBs) using Altium Designer, including schematic capture, basic component selection, and layout updates.
Perform first-level troubleshooting of boards, components, and simple subsystems using standard lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, optical benches).
Review engineering drawings, schematics, and design documents with strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Participate in root-cause investigations, propose solutions for well-defined issues, and implement corrective actions under supervision.
Assist with component obsolescence reviews and simple redesigns (footprint updates, equivalent part evaluations).
Build and troubleshoot early prototypes, including board bring-up, wiring, fixture assembly, and sensor/optics alignment tasks.
Execute engineering test plans with minimal guidance—perform measurements, capture data, maintain clean logs, and document outcomes clearly.
Create and maintain engineering documentation—including schematics, prototype build notes, test reports, and BOM updates.
Work closely with senior engineers across electrical, optical, and mechanical teams to support project execution.
Demonstrate strong initiative, rapid learning ability, and willingness to take ownership of assigned tasks.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
The Individual
Required:
Bachelor's degree with 0-2 years of experience in relevant engineering discipline.
Capability with relevant design tools (Altium/OrCAD, Pspice simulation, PCB layout, etc.)
Familiarity with structured problem solving and solution evaluation/selection
Familiarity with Change Control Process and ability to learn relevant tools
Ability to support multiple projects across varied products and subsystems
Develops and maintains effective cross functional relationships and is capable of quickly earning trust and respect.
Situational Adaptability: Sees ahead clearly; can anticipate future concerns.
Preferred:
Master’s degree
Understanding of Optical systems.
