About the role

Tomorrow.io’s Space & Sensors team is responsible for the development of unique RF-based sensing systems, such as radar and sonar, from architecture through implementation. The team is also responsible for the  development of corresponding spacecraft and constellations in support of Tomorrow.io’s Operation Tomorrow Space, which will collect data to be integrated seamlessly into our existing forecasting and modeling systems, revolutionizing global weather intelligence.

We’re looking for a Sr. Operations Software Engineer to help us develop the mission-critical software systems necessary to launch, deploy, and operate a fleet of scientific instruments in space, from Earth. Come join a group of engineers and scientists that dream on the IR spectrum, call astrodynamics “fun”, and could talk for days about why time is way harder than you think. Together, we will build the biggest weather platform in the world!

What you'll do:

  • Develop the tools mission operators and climate scientists need to achieve mission success
  • Support payload operators and scientists in achieving mission success
  • Contribute to the definition of interfaces between various components (ground system to spacecraft, spacecraft bus to payload, etc.)
  • Work with DevOps and IT teams on topics such as production environment, deployment strategies, and security measures
  • Provide training and documentation for all production software systems

What you bring:

  • 6+ years of experience with mission- or safety-critical software systems
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • Ability to work autonomously/independently on complex projects
  • Work with stakeholders to clarify requirements and satisfy product needs
  • Experience developing production-quality software
  • Exposure to aerospace systems (i.e. satellites, airplanes, rockets)
  • Understanding of microservice architectures
  • Advanced knowledge of Python (4+ years)
  • Some C/C++ experience
  • REST API frameworks (aiohttp, Flask, etc.)
  • Scientific computing (NumPy/SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib)
  • Data modeling (Data Classes, Enumerations, Type Hinting)
  • Database interfaces (SQLAlchemy, PyMongo, InfluxDB)
  • Communication protocols (namedtuple, struct, socket)
  • Quality assurance (pytest, mocker, PEP 8)
  • Platforms/Infrastructure
    • AWS (Elastic Container Service, Lambda, S3, SQS)
    • Terraform
    • Docker, Kubernetes, Argo Workflows & Events
  • Intermediate knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes
  • Intermediate knowledge of SQL, NoSQL, and/or time series databases
  • Intermediate knowledge of GCP, Azure resources
  • Provide mentoring to more junior engineers as needed

So if while watching a rocket launch broadcast, you try to catch a glimpse at what all those people on-console are looking at. When you hear “The space telescope is fully deployed”, you ask yourself “How did they do that from Earth?”. How many people did it take to get to the moon? It had to have been more than the three astronauts in the command module. If these are thoughts you find yourself having, then this is the team for you!

If you have reached this point and you are super excited but not sure you check all the boxes - we still want to speak with you! Your passion is priceless. Other things can be learned.
