Location: Upper East Side  

Org Unit: Circulation Services 

Work Days: Monday - Sunday, seeking morning, miday and evening shifts.

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt 

Salary Range: $22.83 - $26.04  

*As required under NYC Human Rights Law Int 1208-2018 - Salary range for this role when Hired for NYC Offices 

Position Summary

Under general supervision, serves as a front-line representative providing high quality customer service and facilitating access to Library resources and Library staff expertise in order to meet the needs of patrons while promoting a culture and environment that is welcoming, stimulating and supportive

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintains a neat and orderly appearance of the Library. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, re-shelving materials, collecting materials from study carrels and tables, straightening furniture and cleaning monitors and whiteboards.
  • Enforces Library policies concerning appropriate behavior and appropriate use of computers and other resources on the premises. Monitors electronic security and fire alarm systems and handles violations or false alarms. Coordinates evacuations as needed.
  • Directs and provides information to visitors at the Lobby Courtesy Desk. Calls staff to announce visitors or deliveries and monitors public use of courtesy telephone. Monitors the security gate and escalates any concerns.
  • Performs Interlibrary Services related duties when needed including locating, pulling, photocopying, scanning, downloading and forwarding materials requested by patrons from other libraries.
  • Manages online requests for use of Lobby easel displays.
  • Closes the Library in absence of supervisor or as needed or assigned, insuring that all patrons have exited, all equipment is turned off properly and that the space is secure.
  • Assists patrons, in person/by phone/electronically, in determining the availability and location of Library print and online materials using the computerized Library system and other online resources. Assists patrons in the use of electronic databases.
  • Assists patrons in use of the Library's print and photocopy management system. Maintains computers and printers in public areas, troubleshoots basic hardware problems and escalates difficult problems.
  • Utilizes the Library’s computerized system to circulate and process materials and maintain a patron database. Processes renewals, holds, lost/overdue books, new books and reserves. Notifies patrons of any fees/fines, collects money and issues receipts.
  • Reviews events within the Events Calendar for correctness and completeness. Liaises with departments to ensure event listings are of sufficient quality and to increase usage of the calendar. Supports users, patrons and visitors in finding events.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience

Approximately 2-3 years of related work experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to exercise standards of professionalism, including appearance, presentation and demeanor.
  • Advanced oral and written English communication skills.
