Department: Center for Advanced Training & Apprenticeships (CATA)
General Statement of Job
The CATA Trainer – Diesel Technology is responsible for delivering hands-on and theoretical instruction in diesel engine systems, diagnostics, repair procedures, and maintenance for commercial vehicles and equipment. The instructor ensures students gain the necessary knowledge, certifications, and skills to succeed in the diesel mechanic and heavy vehicle maintenance industry
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Instructs Diesel Technology courses for students of varying experience levels.
- Delivers curriculum aligned with industry standards and student success outcomes.
- Assesses and improves training materials and instructional methods for clarity and effectiveness.
- Encourages student participation and supports academic and career goals.
- Develops individualized educational plans and tracks student progress.
- Maintains accurate records of student performance and attendance.
- Communicates student concerns, behavioral issues, and attendance gaps to program coordinators.
- Refers students to appropriate support services when necessary.
- Promotes a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment.
- Coordinates with staff and industry partners to ensure curriculum relevance.
- Travels to instructional sites within the College district as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of four (4) years of hands-on experience in the diesel mechanics industry required.
- Associate’s Degree in Diesel Technology or a related field preferred.
- Experience delivering training or mentoring in an educational or workplace setting preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in diesel engine systems, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance.
- Strong instructional skills with the ability to explain complex mechanical concepts clearly.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage time, multitask, and meet instructional deadlines.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Willingness to work evenings or weekends and travel locally for instructional purposes.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College and CATA.
