Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for assisting in the classroom with implementing learning experiences that advance the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development of children ages birth - (4) four-year old enrolled in the City's Pre-K 4 SA program at the Model Education Centers or any participating organization/program. Supports partner teaching staff with preparation of materials, daily activities, and daily growth and development of students. Coordinates the loading and unloading of students on and off the bus at transportation sites. Ensures the safety of students under care and in compliance with Child Care Licensing standards. This is a temporary position utilizing mobile educators to support staffing needs at various alliance sites throughout the community.  Exercises no supervision.

This position is funded by sales tax that has been approved by the citizens of San Antonio for a limited time period. This position, therefore, is subject to at-will employment status, and is unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission.

Varies depending on the needs of the department.

Work Hours
6:45 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Schedule will vary and be determined based on departmental needs. 

Examples of duties

  • Assists with the implementation of early-age curriculum in the classroom.
  • Assists in planning and preparing the learning environment and preparing needed materials and supplies, which includes maintaining a clean and organized classroom.
  • Observes students' progress and communicates with other educators.
  • Prepares, adapts, and delivers instructional material to students in groups and individually to include conducting large-group and small-group activities.
  • Assists in creating and maintaining student records and prepares reports relative to student performance, attendance, meals, safety, licensing standards, etc.
  • Supports children’s social-emotional development by using positive guidance, co-regulation strategies, and age-appropriate conflict resolution techniques to foster a safe environment.
  • Monitors and engages students in developmentally appropriate activities, often by interacting with children at eye-level.
  • Monitors and assists in maintaining safety at transportation sites, in the classroom, motor skills room, playground, cafeteria, hallways, and other areas. Builds relationships with students to create a positive, safe, and welcoming school culture.
  • Maintains professional communication with parents as requested.
  • May assist students while loading, riding, and unloading buses.
  • Assists with fastening the appropriate child safety restraint system and follows all safety routines and procedures for transportation.
  • Monitors and assists in maintaining order at transportation sites, in the classroom, motor sills room, playground, hallways, and other areas.
  • Reports incidents, illnesses, injuries, and violations to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist Food Service Workers in distributing breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily.
  • Collaborates with staff in the classrooms during scheduled breaks.
  • Participates in required professional development.
  • May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities and assist non-ambulatory students.
  • In the case of an emergency situation, may be required to lift and carry students weighing up to 50 pounds to move students during dangerous situations.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) credential OR twelve (12) college hours in Education or Childhood Development from an accredited college or university.
  • Previous experience working with young children in a private, charter, public school, or daycare setting.
  • Ability to pass DFPS (Texas Department of Family Protective Services) background check.
  • Certified early childhood teacher.
  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.
