About the role

ABOUT TRIO UPWARD BOUND:

The Upward Bound Program is grant-funded through the U.S. Department of Education and works with high school students to help them prepare for post-secondary education, serving approximately 60 students from Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center and Ben Davis High School. Throughout the academic year, students receive individualized advising, tutoring, workshops, and more. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school and attend and complete post-secondary education. During the summer, Upward Bound hosts Summer Academy, a six-week program for students to take academic and college courses at Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis and participate in college and career readiness activities.

GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The Program Assistant will support programming, students, and staff during Summer Academy by building mentor relationships with students, contributing to program preparation and implementation, and being an overall support to staff and students. Summer Academy is scheduled June 3- July 12, 2024.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student-Facing

  • Provide direct supervision and support to Upward Bound program participants during scheduled activities: classes, workshops, programs, and field trips.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages student growth.
  • Address and resolve any issues or concerns related to participant behavior, academic progress, safety, or health through problem solving, conflict management, and communication with staff.
  • Build relationships with students and serve as a mentor and positive role model by offering guidance and support in academic and personal development.

Staff-Collaboration

  • Assist in the coordination and execution of program logistics.
  • Assist in maintaining program records and documents.
  • Attend required training of the program or partner institutions (Ben Davis High School and Ivy Tech Community College).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma and some college
  • Must be available for training in late May and for the duration of the program (June 3 through July 12) including occasional overnight field trips 
  • Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with adolescents from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds
  • Exceptional organization, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Pass criminal background check
  • Must demonstrate the ability to promote an inclusive environment that reflects the broad diversity and backgrounds represented by our students and employees in which every individual feels respected and valued.
