Job Description Summary

The role of the successful candidate will be to build, deploy, and maintain the frontends for data engineering infrastructure for the Advanced Simons Observatory within the Data Delivery group. This distributed infrastructure is responsible for both internal and public data releases, and ranges from web-based map viewers to large databases of simulation products.

Job Description

The Center for Particle Cosmology (CPC) at the Department of Physics and Astronomy facilitates unfettered interactions and collaborations between the traditionally separate groups of particle physics and cosmology. Our mission is the connection of cosmology with new ideas in fundamental physics, directly testable both through the current flux of data from observational cosmology and imminent new particle physics experiments. The CPC is a key contributor to the Simons Observatory (SO), a millimeter-wave survey experiment currently being built for observations from the Atacama Desert in Chile, with a variety of scientific goals from probing the early universe to detecting millimeter-wave transients.

Job Responsibilities:

Application Developer C:

  • Frontend web development for data visualization tools, like the Simons Observatory map viewer

  • Frontend web development and design for data sharing tools

  • Some backend web development for data sharing tools

  • Deployment of web services using Docker and Rancher

  • User support with the developed services.

Sr. Application Developer:

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Senior Application Developer will manage development and technology selection of frontend services. They will take the lead on these responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Sr. Application Developer: Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Application Developer C: Bachelor of Science and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Experience in software development is the highest priority for this position. The following skills are required for this position:

  • Significant experience with front-end web development (ideally with TypeScript, but JavaScript knowledge is acceptable)

  • Experience with the Python language

  • Experience with database integration (specifically postgres and sqlalchemy)

  • Experience with distributed projects using git

  • Good communication skills

The Sr. Application Developer must have experience with project management and technology selection.

The following skills are additionally preferred for this position:

  • A background knowledge of CMB surveys and their data products

  • Experience with the HTMX web framework

  • Experience with the React web framework

  • Experience with Python web frameworks

  • Experience with the go language

  • Experience with the S3 API and open-source alternatives (e.g. minio or JuiceFS).
