About the role

Company Description

About IKEA Industry

IKEA Industry, part of Inter IKEA Group, is the world’s largest producer of wooden furniture and an integrated part of the IKEA value chain. We operate 38 production units across Poland, Slovakia, Portugal, Sweden, Lithuania, China and Hungary, covering forestry, board production, components and furniture manufacturing.

Within IKEA Industry, the Automation Development department develops, validates and implements world-class automation and robotics solutions that strengthen long-term competitive advantage. The team collaborates with factories, technology suppliers, product engineers and research institutions across the entire automation lifecycle — from feasibility and development to installation, ramp-up and continuous improvement.

We are now looking for a Project Engineer to join the Automation Development team.

Job Description

About the Role

As a Project Engineer, you will support the execution of automation development projects across IKEA Industry factories. Your responsibilities will include project coordination, documentation preparation, technical follow-up, and supporting installations and commissioning of automation systems.

The role is based at the Manufacturing Development Center (MDC) in Zbąszyń, where interdisciplinary engineering teams co-create innovative production technologies for IKEA Industry.

Location: Manufacturing Development Center (MDC), Zbąszyń

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate project activities within automation and robotics development initiatives.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, monitoring and reporting.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, layouts, process descriptions and risk assessments.
  • Work closely with Automation Engineers, Robotics Engineers, product development and factory teams.
  • Support on-site installation, commissioning, testing and ramp-up of automation solutions.
  • Facilitate communication with vendors, system integrators and internal stakeholders.
  • Identify deviations, risks and support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support knowledge sharing, lessons learned and development of engineering standards.

Qualifications

Required competencies:

  • Engineering background (automation, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, production engineering or similar).
  • Understanding of industrial automation, robotics, sensors, actuators and production processes.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Experience supporting engineering or technology implementation projects.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Analytical and structured approach to problem solving.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in multicultural environments.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).

Travel Requirements – Critical to Understand

Business travel is a fundamental and dominant part of this role. Project execution within Automation Development requires continuous on-site presence in IKEA Industry factories across Europe.

Approximately 80% of total working time is spent in delegations, supporting development, installation, validation and optimization of automation solutions directly on the production floor.

This is a travel-intensive position, designed for candidates who feel comfortable working predominantly at factory sites rather than at the MDC office environment.
