The Department of Marine Resources (DMR), Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture Inspection Division, is seeking Agency Only applicants with strong scientific skills to fill a Senior Aquaculture Inspector position located at the West Boothbay Harbor Headquarters.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This is investigative and protective services work in seafood safety and public health. This position will conduct routine aquaculture inspections and compliance work under the DMR Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture Inspection Division. This position will analyze inspection findings and report any deficiencies or non-conformance to Federal and State Law or procedure. This position will also assist the Inspection Division Supervisor with writing policies, procedures, and reports for the program. This position may oversee the removal of gear from a site once the Commissioner has terminated a lease and coordinate enforcement activities with Marine Patrol.
This position has a significant field component and travel throughout the Maine coast is common from spring to fall. Remote work is possible, with management approval, especially in the offseason.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES PREFERRED: The successful candidate will have knowledge of the aquaculture industry as well as the following:
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and standards.
- Knowledge of biology, basic statistics, aquaculture methods and technologies as it applies to seeding, grow-out, harvest, lease management, and compliance to the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.
- Ability to identify and document infractions of laws, rules, and/or regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively. This includes the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with industry members.
- Strong technical writing and GIS mapping skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Aquaculture, Marine Science, Environmental Science, Food Safety, or related field and significant experience in a regulatory or compliance field.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class):
Certification for Seafood HACCP.
Preference will go to candidates with experience with small boat handling, working on the water, and working underwater via SCUBA.
