Technical Documentation Intern
Longevity HoldingsAbout the role
Longevity Holdings is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented summer intern to join our IT team for a high-impact documentation initiative. This intern will own the research, drafting, and delivery of functional and technical specifications for a defined set of our core internal products and services. The work product from this engagement will serve as a foundational reference for engineering, operations, and business leadership going forward.
This role is a strong fit for a candidate with an interest in software engineering, technical writing, or product management who is looking to build practical experience translating complex systems into clear, durable documentation.
What You'll Do
- Review Git repositories containing source code for assigned products and services, using AI-assisted tools (including Anthropic Claude) to accelerate comprehension and drafting
- Conduct structured discovery interviews with operations leads, product owners, and engineering subject matter experts to capture intended behavior, business logic, and system context
- Produce functional specifications documenting how each product or service behaves from a user and business process perspective
- Produce technical specifications documenting system architecture, data flows, dependencies, APIs, and integration points
- Identify and document gaps between observed or implemented functionality and the intended behavior described by product SMEs, and surface these as discussion points for stakeholders
- Develop a documentation framework covering taxonomy, formatting standards, storage and version control conventions, and a review and maintenance process for ongoing accessibility
- Present findings, completed documentation, and gap analysis recommendations to business leadership at the close of the term
Deliverables:
By the end of the internship, the intern will be expected to deliver the following:
- Functional and Technical Specification Documents - One specification package per scoped product or service, covering functional behavior, system architecture, key workflows, data inputs and outputs, and known edge cases or limitations. Documents will be formatted consistently and stored in a designated, accessible location within the company's existing tooling.
- Documentation Framework - A lightweight governance document defining how specifications should be structured, where they live, who owns them, and how they get reviewed and updated over time. This includes a proposed review cadence and a recommended RACI or ownership model for ongoing maintenance.
- Gap Analysis Report - A structured summary of discrepancies identified between current implemented functionality and intended behavior as described by product SMEs. Each gap entry will include a description of the discrepancy, the source of the intended behavior (e.g., SME interview, product documentation, business requirement), a preliminary impact assessment, and a recommendation or open question for leadership discussion.
- End-of-Term Presentation - A presentation to business leaders synthesizing the documentation produced, the framework established, and the gap analysis findings, with recommendations for how the organization should prioritize follow-on work.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Technical Communication, or a related field
- Familiarity with Git and comfort navigating source code repositories, even without deep language expertise in all areas
- Strong written communication skills with an ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences
- Experience with or demonstrated interest in AI-assisted workflows (experience with tools like Claude, ChatGPT, or similar is a plus)
- Comfort conducting stakeholder interviews and synthesizing input from multiple, sometimes conflicting, perspectives
- Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage a structured project over a multi-week timeline with periodic check-ins
Preferred:
- Prior exposure to technical writing, product documentation, or business analysis
- Familiarity with software architecture concepts (APIs, microservices, databases, consumer/producer patterns)
- Experience with documentation tools such
