Purpose

The Perioperative Staff Development Coordinator will serve as a key team member in the Ambulatory Surgery Center at UT Health Austin. This full-time position is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating the nursing care provided to the surgical patient during the pre-admission, pre-op, intraoperative and post-op period. The Perioperative Staff Development Coordinator will have deep subject matter expertise in all areas of perioperative care and will coordinate evidence-based, quality education programs and activities that promote professional competency for both licensed and non-licensed staff.. 

Responsibilities

  • Functions in various nursing capacities in the care of ambulatory surgery patients and is willing to cross train to fully understand the functions of the center. Provides leadership and vision for educational processes and structure. Conducts rounds on perioperative units, continuously observing and assessing the quality of patient care, and identifying nursing educational needs. Demonstrates practical, technical or specialized knowledge and skills required for the role of the peri-operative nurse in compliance with regulations and standards of practice. Utilizes keen observation skills to provide feedback on nursing assessments, planning, interventions, and evaluations of patient care.

  • Provides and assists with orientation and onboarding of new employees. Conducts orientation in a manner that facilitates a positive learning environment. Participates in the development, coordination, and management of facilitating, conducting, and evaluating annual competencies for all staff members.

  • Assesses the training needs of nursing staff to develop, implement, evaluate and document staff development programs, such as job-specific orientation, in-services, and continuing education activities for clinical department personnel. Acts as a preceptor and resource person to assist clinical department employees to successfully complete the job specific orientation.

  • Responsible for the planning, coordinating and conducting required education and/or special training sessions in compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws. Maintains appropriate documentation of educational programming, each individual employee’s attendance at educational programs and competency validation as needed. Maintains up to date personnel files with each employee’s educational information

  • Collaborates with the clinical team to come up with new policies and procedures and/or update the existing policies and procedures. Helps to communicate ongoing changes throughout the organization, including documentation updates, EMR releases, new approved procedures, etc. Fosters teamwork and contributes to achieving team goals, impacting the growth of the organization through promoting excellence in patient experience and high-quality care.

  • Performs other related job functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Active Texas RN license and a minimum of three (3) years of perioperative experience. BLS, ACLS Certification upon employment. PALS certification within 6 months of hire. Knowledge of current surgical procedures and anesthesia care. Knowledge of current practice of decontamination, high-level disinfe
