The Chief of Staff to the Associate Vice President of Infrastructure & Operations (AVP) is a highly visible, senior level strategic thought partner that provides executive and managerial support to the AVP.

The Chief of Staff acts in concert with and with the authority of the AVP, to drive organizational goals and priorities, assist with effective decision-making, project management, and overall execution of division goals. The Chief of Staff will work directly with University leadership, Department Directors, and other internal and external stakeholders on implementation of strategic initiatives.

The Chief of Staff values diversity of thought, willingly engages in difficult conversations, and serves as a catalyst for organization-wide discussions. Known as a natural convener and collaborator, the successful candidate recognizes the importance of relationships and partnerships at all levels and thoughtfully provides sound advice and guidance in support of organizational initiatives.

This position works primarily on campus in Golden, Colorado.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Management

  • Strategic assessment of Infrastructure & Operations organization and operations in support of meeting or exceeding the department strategic goals.
  • Offering inspiration, support, and guidance to others in an effort to achieve the department initiatives and annual goals.
  • Create and foster a culture and climate conducive to high-impact teamwork.
  • Establish effective relationships with both internal and external constituencies and serve as an effective representative of the department and the university.
  • Directly oversee a team that drives positive results in an innovative, collaborative, effective, efficient, and high-quality manner.
  • Ensure that individuals with the appropriate mix of knowledge, skills, behaviors, and experiences are selected, and placed, with a focus on building a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Ensure Campus Operations are Effective and High-Quality

  • Develop strategies to measure and assess the quality, timeliness, and effectiveness of campus operations.
  • Researches, identifies, and assists in implementing proven approaches to managing University operations with the goal of maximizing quality, efficiency, and resourcefulness.
  • Ensure that campus operational procedures and policies are well understood & transparent to internal and external clients, Mines senior leadership and Board of Trustees.
  • Provide guidance and support to I&O department directors in day to day operational matters in an effort to ensure needs of campus constituents are met.

Ongoing Development of Services and Client Relations (Internal & External)

  • Provides direction, guidance, leadership and mentorship for department managers, promoting an open collaborative, inclusive work environment that encourages sharing of new ideas and concepts in support of ongoing improvement of I&O services and client relations.   
  • With confidence, yet in a humble and diplomatic manner, fosters lasting relationships with campus constituents.

Provide Effective Fiduciary Stewardship of University Resources

  • Develop annual revenue and expense budget forecasts for I&O department/divisions.
  • Develop, implement and maintain multi-year plans and reports indicating actual to plan variances, and projected strategies.
  • A fiduciary for the University, monitors and assists in managing department/divisional operating budgets ensuring expenditures are appropriate and strategic in recognition of the University’s overall budget and financial position.

Relationship building

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with members of the University community including the President, Provost, Executive Vice President, Deans, Vice Presidents, Department Heads, and Directors. Works effectively with senior leaders and other faculty and staff to ensure proper communication of campus operational activities.  
  • Builds and maintains regular and effective communication with community partners and external stakeholders, including the City of Golden, campus neighbors, community members, and local businesses.

Customer/Client Service

  • Develops metrics to ensure that the needs of the internal and external customers are being fulfilled with a high degree of satisfaction.  
  • Develops/oversees strategies to drive campus operational effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, management, leadership, communications, public relations/engagement, project management, engineering, or related field.
