Primary Purpose of this Position:

Responsible for the management of the state and local team and administration of both direct and indirect state and local taxes to ensure company compliance with requisite laws and regulations.  Minimizes company’s state and local tax liability through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations permitting alternate treatment of taxable items.

 

What will you be responsible for?

  • Directly supervises state and local tax professionals in performance of their respective duties.
  • Coordinates and reviews research for any state or local tax planning alternatives that will minimize the company’s tax liability, including preparation and presentation of alternatives to management as directed by Director, Tax Administration & Reporting.
  • Administers the preparation and review of both direct and indirect U.S. state and local and indirect Canadian tax return compliance including, but not limited to, income and franchise, incentives, real and personal property, sales & use, services, and excise.
  • Serves as primary liaison between the corporate office and groups, divisions, and plants in matters including but not limited to, income and franchise tax, incentives, real and personal property tax, sales & use tax, services tax, excise and other taxes.
  • Reviews published material and data on new developments in federal, state and local tax laws for the purpose of reducing tax costs to Ball Corporation.
  • Collaborates with accounting and other departments on tax matters as required.
  • Oversees all state and local tax income, franchise, property and sales/use tax audits by various tax authorities.
  • Reviews property tax assessments as well as protests and abatement requests prepared by the state and local tax staff.
  • Reviews accruals for property, sales/use and franchise taxes.
  • Assists with the quarterly and annual state and local U.S. income tax provision requirements for financial statement reporting.
  • Conducts property and state and local use tax reviews to ensure the company is in compliance with applicable Keeps project cost control updated by continuously reforecasting to ensure project aligns and is executed within defined funding (Operational and Capital)
  • Assists in preparing requests for ruling and other formal tax communication matters, and coordinates same with legal department.
  • As determined by the Director, Tax Administration & Reporting, participates as part of mergers and acquisitions team to conduct due diligence and related structural planning for potential acquisitions and/or dispositions.
  • While the regular working cycle of this position is usually five days on (Monday-Friday), this job may include working weekends (Saturday and Sunday); working hours may vary as specified by management.  Incumbent must be able to work overtime on a regular basis and/or be on call as directed by management.

What are we looking for?

  • Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college education or work-related experience
  • Job related experience for 8-10 year(s) minimum
  • Certifications/Licenses/Other: Master’s degree in taxation preferred
  • Ability to apply intensive and diversified evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard tax techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Ability to productively and independently conduct technical tax research.  Requires detailed knowledge of authoritative references and statutes.  Ability to summarize research findings and conclusions for the benefit of personnel without a similar technical background while maintaining the ability to document the technical research for future reference.
  • Ability to work within an environment with recurring deadlines and perform tasks with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to apply tax laws to specific transactions or facts to advise or propose actions for consideration to the director, tax administration.
  • Working knowledge of the following areas:
    • Income/franchise tax law
    • Incentive compliance
    • Property tax law
    • Sales/use tax law, including Canadian services tax rules.
  • Comprehensive understanding of state and local tax laws and the ability to read, understand, and apply applicable statutes to a variety of business situations.
  • General understanding of financial information systems, particularly fixed assets, the general ledger, and tax compliance/planning software.
