Looking to grow in your nursing career? This nurse will work with a nurse practitioner to assess patients prior to surgery for their readiness to have surgery and recover successfully. They are doing lots of education on how the surgery will affect their co-morbidities and how their co-morbidities will affect their recovery. They do lots of training on medications, pre surgery preparation, post-surgery follow up. They order tests and imaging that might be needed prior to or after surgery. There is often coordination of care when the patient needs clearance from another specialty (cardio for example). Provides clinical support to provider during clinic. This includes gathering information from patients, taking vital signs, and occasionally blood drawings and EKGs. Maintains patient records following pre op clinic visit. Keeps track of follow-up appointments. Schedules ordered testing as ordered by provider and communicates date/time with the patient. Communicates with surgeons and specialty offices regarding patient follow up prior to patient scheduled surgeries. Helps to monitor schedule and maintain adequate appointment availability.

Qualifications 

• Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.

• Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.

• Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.

• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.

• Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
