About the role
Thuma is looking for an HRIS & Payroll Administrator to join our fast growing team. The HRIS & Payroll Administrator plays a critical role in managing and maintaining our HR Information System (HRIS) and ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll processing. This role serves as the primary point of contact for HRIS administration, payroll operations, data integrity, compliance, and HR analytics. Collaborating with HR, Finance, and IT teams, the HRIS & Payroll Administrator will optimize system functionality, improve payroll accuracy, and support HR compliance initiatives.
Thuma’s Headquarters is based in the historic Presidio neighborhood of San Francisco. This is a hybrid role, and candidates should be available to come into our SF office as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
- Manage HRIS administration, role provisioning, backend rule configuration, and approval workflows.
- Maintain data compliance, data hygiene, and audit processes within HR systems.
- Develop and maintain HR analytics and reporting dashboards.
- Process multi-state payroll using Rippling, ensuring accuracy and compliance with minimum wage laws, tax regulations, and deductions.
- Administer 401(k) contributions, funding reconciliations, and compliance reporting.
- Manage payroll tax filings, workers’ compensation audits, and unemployment claims processing.
- Support equity reporting in Carta and ensure tax and compliance accuracy.
- Coordinate Pay Data Reporting, ACA compliance, and benefits non-discrimination testing.
- Oversee new hire onboarding, including I-9 verifications, E-Verify, and background screen adjudication.
- Ensure new hire paperwork, labor law posters, and SOPs are updated and compliant.
- Manage contractor onboarding, classification, and payment processes.
- Handle visa support and employment eligibility documentation.
- Maintain and update company intranet with HR policies, payroll information, and How-To guides for the business.
- Track and administer Leaves of Absence (LOA), including FMLA, QLEs, and benefits adjustments.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal employment laws, including pay transparency and wage regulations.
- Support new job title creation, market benchmarking, and compensation structure reviews.
This Might Describe You:
- 4-7+ years of experience in HR, payroll, and HRIS administration, with at least 3 years of direct payroll ownership.
- Expertise in multi-state payroll, tax laws, wage regulations, and compliance reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities.
- Experience managing Rippling payroll software, contractor classification (Worksome preferred), and equity administration (Carta preferred).
- Ability to handle sensitive payroll and employee data with discretion and accuracy.
- Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with HR reporting, SOP development, and policy documentation.
- Knowledge of visa processes, labor law compliance, and workers’ compensation.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
