The Department of Surgery at Atrium Health and Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina, is seeking an academic bariatric and minimally invasive surgeon to join the Section of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.

Position Highlights

  • Qualifications:
    Candidates must have completed fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery with a focus on bariatric surgery.
    • Strong commitment to patient care, education, research, and leadership at local and national levels.
    • Eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant (>2 years) or Associate Professor of Surgery.
    • ASMBS certified bariatric surgeon required (qualified to be certified)
  • Scope of Practice:
    The position emphasizes modern bariatric surgery, including minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RNY), sleeve gastrectomy, SADI/DS, and revisions, utilizing robotic and endoscopic technologies.
  • Education and Leadership:
    • Active involvement in the education of fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice practitioners (APPs).
    • Potential to serve as the site director for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSQIP) as the current director transitions.
    • Collaboration with the Section Chief to establish strategic vision and direction for the COE location of Bariatric Surgery.
  • Research:
    • Participation in clinical and translational research.
  • Fellowship Program:
    The Fellowship Council-accredited MIS/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship program selects two fellows annually, offering clinical and research opportunities.

The Section of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery is supported by a robust team of fellows and inpatient and outpatient advanced care practitioners. It prioritizes excellence in patient-centered care, education, and research with a focus on equitable, effective, and efficient healthcare delivery.

  • Key Resources:
    • Six surgeons, six medical bariatricians, and four APPs form the section.
    • Centers of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery are located at Atrium Health Mercy and Atrium Health Cabarrus, accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).
  • Facilities:
    • Atrium Health Cabarrus (primary campus for site director): A 457-bed tertiary care hospital located 28 miles northeast of the Carolinas Medical Center campus.
    • Atrium Health Mercy: A 235-bed acute care hospital located 1.3 miles from the Carolinas Medical Center campus.
    • Atrium Health Weight Management offices are situated in Charlotte, Pineville, Gastonia, and Concord, North Carolina.
