Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach administers the men’s basketball program and shares responsibility for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the intercollegiate athletic programs.
Job Description:
Administers the competitive men’s basketball program emphasizing integrity and the educational welfare of student-athletes, striving for excellence within the University's mission; and coordinates recruitment, prepares reports, and serves as a spokesperson for the team.
Works with the team to develop and report information related to the team roster, schedule, and results from the previous year and current season outlook; and collaborates on media relations to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of team updates and achievements.
Monitors communication platforms within the athletic department; and facilitates smooth coordination throughout the 12 to 24-month calendar on the composite communication platform.
Administers, manages, and leads the men’s basketball program in a manner that positively reflects on the image and reputation of the University at all times, aligning with the University's mission.
Assists the Director in evaluating the programmatic and operational effectiveness of the department, making regular operational and managerial adjustments as necessary; and advocates to senior leadership for major operational and managerial adjustments that have a significant division-wide impact.
Communicates problems, issues, and ideas for program improvement within the Athletic Department to the Director, and supports hiring search committees.
Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage inclusively and equitably with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Stays competent and up-to-date through self-directed professional development, establishing professional contacts with colleagues, attending workshops/courses, and completing relevant training opportunities.
Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars to maintain and develop knowledge and skills regarding current trends that can impact athletic programs and student-athletes, ensuring awareness of both beneficial and potentially harmful developments; supervises and evaluates the work of assistant men’s basketball coaches and other support staff; and provides strategic oversight for select athletic department units by executing tasks, evaluating functions and the efficiency of facility use.
Supervises paraprofessional staff; provides ongoing feedback to select department unit employees; completes the annual performance evaluations for each regular status and extended temporary staff; mutually sets goals and expectations for each staff; and resolves workplace conflicts promptly and seeks support from supervisor, Human Resources or Office of Equal Opportunity Program if needed.
Develops and disseminates rules related to the expected conduct of men’s basketball players when representing Gallaudet University, both on and off campus, and empowering our program members to engage in discussions about these rules; organizes and conducts all men’s basketball practice and skill development sessions; teaches player mechanics and techniques to the men’s basketball players, while also equipping them with tools for life; and ensures steps are taken to reduce the risks of injury.
