About the role

To gain a comprehensive understanding of patient needs, GSK collaborates with diverse non-profit organizations such as Patient Advocacy Groups (PAGs), Public Health groups, disease agnostic non-profits (e.g., AARP), and advocacy-focused arms of Health Professional Associations.

Our ambition is to build a more interactive, transparent, and trusting relationship with patients, care partners and advocacy organizations to improve the care experience for those we serve. To meet this ambition, we are establishing an enterprise-orientated, product-agnostic, strategic US Patient Advocacy function. This function will be responsible for strategy, planning, relationship management, and enabling activities. The US Patient Advocacy & Engagement (PA&E) Enterprise Head will report to the VP (Vice President), US Government Affairs and Public Policy and lead this newly established function in the US. As the US PA&E Enterprise Head, you will drive development of US PA&E strategy across prioritized disease states and will lead a dedicated team of strategic organizational leads and support roles, focused on understanding patient needs and fostering meaningful, collaborative partnership with patient organizations. This deep understanding of patient needs will allow GSK partners to support access to innovative vaccines and therapeutics.  The incumbent will work with stakeholders in a highly matrixed environment. These partners/ departments include members of the US Commercial Leadership Team, US Business Unit Heads and Functional Vice Presidents, the global PA&E Head and national PAG (Patient Advocacy Groups) and public health group leaders.

The role's responsibilities include the following:

  • Development and execution of US PA&E ambitions, strategy, and plans across prioritized therapeutic areas in support of GSK's mission and goals, through partnership with Commercial, Medical, & Government Affairs.
  • Establishment of mutually beneficial and collaborative relationships with prioritized US PAGs and community organizations, representing One GSK voice and establishing GSK as a partner of choice.
  • In collaboration with partners, develop an enterprise-minded, strategic advocacy platform to shape the environment on behalf of GSK patients.
  • Ensuring advocacy partnerships improve the care experience for patients by addressing barriers to care, closing treatment gaps, and measurably improving the understanding, prevention, and treatment of disease. 
  • Connection and collaboration within Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) and with cross-functional GSK teams, including Medical Affairs, Commercial, Market Access, Legal, Compliance, Health Equity, and Communications to drive PA&E planning and patient-focus across the business.
  • Representing GSK at conferences, workshops, and industry events to share insights and represent the organization's commitment to patient advocacy and engagement.
  • Driving innovation to support PA&E and patient insight generation in the US LOC (Local Operating Company), including addressing unmet patient needs, clinical trial development and the creation of feedback loops with patients.
  • Identifying, profiling, and prioritizing external Patient Advocacy organizations or patient-centered non-profits based on US PA&E strategy; Evaluating PAG & relevant stakeholder satisfaction metrics, feedback, and trends; identifying areas for improvement and implementing strategies to enhance PAG experience with GSK.
  • Serving as single point of accountability for governance, controls, oversight, reporting, and risk management of PA activities; ensuring funding areas of interest are aligned cross-functionally and used to guide funding decisions; establishing process and risk management/controls for direct contracting with US patients.

The US PA&E Enterprise Head will lead a team of Strategic PA Organizational Leads and Grants and Pipeline Managers. In this capacity the Head will be responsible for the following.

  • Ensure team serves as an independent, enterprise-oriented, product-agnostic strategic function.
  • Ensure PA activities add value to the company’s development pipeline, increasing clinical success and positive reception of product by regulators and patient communities for better patient outcomes.
  • Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure the highest level of patient understanding and team development.
  • Ensure alignment between PAGs engaged and team capacity, addressing any discrepancies through prioritization or resource allocation.
  • Ensure the team acts as a single point of contact for the prioritized set of PAGs represented by the function.
