Position Overview:
The Director of Homeless Services for the City of Atlanta is responsible for leading, coordinating, and managing citywide initiatives aimed at addressing homelessness. This position requires strategic oversight of programs such as shelter operations, outreach, housing placement, and supportive services to reduce homelessness and promote sustainable housing solutions for vulnerable populations within Atlanta.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a comprehensive citywide homeless services strategy aligned with local, state, and federal policies.
Oversee the operation of emergency shelters, transitional housing, and supportive services programs.
Collaborate with Atlanta’s Continuum of Care (CoC), non-profit organizations, healthcare providers, and government agencies to coordinate efforts and maximize resources.
Lead efforts to reduce homelessness through innovative programs, rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, and prevention initiatives.
Manage departmental staff, including program managers, outreach teams, and support personnel, ensuring effective supervision and professional development.
Administer budgets, oversee grant applications, and secure funding to sustain and grow homeless services programs.
Monitor program performance and outcomes, preparing reports for city leadership, funders, and community stakeholders.
Advocate for policies and initiatives that address the root causes of homelessness and promote affordable housing solutions.
Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations related to homeless services and housing.
Engage with community members, advocacy groups, and local businesses to foster awareness and support for homelessness initiatives.
Promote a trauma-informed, culturally competent approach in service delivery.
Conduct needs assessments and utilize data to inform policy decisions and program enhancements.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Administration, Urban Planning, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Extensive experience in homeless services, social services, or related fields, preferably within municipal government.
- Proven leadership and program management skills.
- Knowledge of Atlanta’s housing market, social service systems, and federal funding opportunities (e.g., HUD programs).
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
- Ability to develop collaborative partnerships across government, non-profit, and community sectors.
- Budget management and grant writing experience.
- Strong analytical and strategic planning abilities.
- Work Environment & Conditions:
- Office-based with frequent field visits to shelters, outreach sites, and community events.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for community engagement or urgent initiatives.
